VIENNA, VA — Athletes at Vienna's Green Hedges School had a moment to shine as the soccer team won its league championship after an undefeated season.

The Green Hedges School Dragons, part of Northern Virginia's ABC League for private independent middle school sports, won the league championship in November with its co-ed varsity soccer team. The fall season brought an undefeated 6-0 record for the Dragons.

"Winning the ABC League Championship and finishing the season undefeated has been an amazing experience for the Green Hedges soccer team and the entire Green Hedges School community," Rendell Williams, the physical education and athletics coordinator for Green Hedges School, told Patch. "Perfection is highly sought after yet most difficult to attain in life and sports. Having a successful season like this teaches kids that great things can be accomplished with hard work, consistency, working together and not giving up when adversity presents itself."

According to Williams, the soccer team's success was due to "the strong play of 8th Graders P.J. Moroney, Sydney Draetta, Aidan Vick, Dorothee Noah, Sebastian Velasquez and Hayden Brandt" as well as key contributors like "7th Graders Liam Bittner-Brenninkmeijer, Landon Weaver and strong net presence from goaltender Bas van Maanen."

The varsity soccer team has 19 players between grades 6 and 8. The team advanced to the championship with a semifinal win over Burgundy Farm Country Day School. Green Hedges School won the championship with a 4-2 victory over Alexandria Country Day School.
