Vienna Crime: House Egged, Injured Goose and Counterfeit Currency

Some of the crime that took place the past week in Vienna.

(Editor’s note: The following information comes to Vienna Patch directly from the Vienna Police Department.)

The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna, Virginia Police Department from October 31, 2014 – November 06, 2014. Readers are reminded that an “arrest” is based upon probable cause and does not always mean that someone was physically taken into custody. Furthermore, it does not mean that an individual is automatically guilty of a crime. Judicial outcomes and post-arrest proceedings can be researched through the appropriate court’s website.

Fraud 14-012187 300 Block Berry Street, SE Between January 01, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. and November 31, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. A resident reported that her elderly aunt may have been defrauded out of several thousand dollars from multiple tree companies.

This case is being investigated.

Note to Citizens – When approached by workers who are soliciting repairs or landscape work at your residence verify that the work is needed, request a written contract and proof that the company possess a valid Town of Vienna solicitors permit. In most cases the unsolicited workers are not reputable and will attempt to scam residents using intimidation.

Suspicious Event 14-010990 Vienna Bargains 132 Maple Avenue, East Between September 10 at 10:18 a.m. and September 30 at 10:18 a.m. An employee reported a former employee had given him jewelry as collateral for a loan. The former employee was to return with repayment at which time he would return her jewelry.

The employee stated she had not returned to claim her jewelry by the date agreed upon.

Animal Case - Quarantine 14-012151 1100 Block Lakewood Drive, SW October 28 12:00 p.m. A resident reported he had been bitten by a neighbor’s dog. The owner of the dog is currently out of town and a caretaker is caring for the dog.

ACO Barker will follow up with this case.

Medical Case 14-012100 The Cedar Lane School 101 Cedar Lane, SW October 29 9:34 a.m. Officer Herrera responded to assist with a student who was in need of medical attention.

Animal Case 14-012110 400 Block Center Street, North October 29 1:30 p.m. ACO Barker responded to the area in reference to a dog at large. Upon his arrival a resident had the dog on a leash however it was unknown who the dog belonged to.

ACO Barker transported the dog to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter where it will be held until the owner can be contacted.

Suspicious Event 14-012111 200 Block Courthouse Road, SW October 29 1:51 p.m. An employee of an area day care reported that the parent of a student, from another school, had been confronting some of the children who had been mean to them. The parent was approached and was told she could not speak to the children in that manner. The parent stated the children had been bullying her son at his school. The employee informed her to report the bullying to the principal at her son’s school. She stated she had filed a report however nothing had been done to correct the problem.

Officer Herrera responded and informed the employee to contact the police department if the parent returns and continues to be confrontational with the children.

Suspicious Event 14-012112 900 Block Lynnhill Court, NE October 29 2:00 p.m. Officer Digan received a report from a police department in New Mexico reporting a resident had received a suspicious text from a Town of Vienna resident.

Officer Digan responded to the Vienna resident’s home and spoke with the resident who stated she had not sent the text messages. She was able to provide her cell phone call log to confirm her statement.

The New Mexico police department was contacted and determined the originating texts had come from a different telephone number.

Fraud 14-012117 Peet’s Coffee and Tea 332 Maple Avenue, East October 29 5:07 p.m. An employee reported a customer had paid for his coffee with counterfeit currency.

This case is being investigated.

Suspicious Event 14-012120 The Giant Shopping Center 359 Maple Avenue, East October 29 6:03 p.m.

MPO Shaw responded to the area for the report of 3-4 juveniles walking on the roof of the shopping center. Upon his arrival only one individual was located. The individual was escorted from the roof and released after being counseled on the dangers of walking on the roof.

Assault 14-012126 Outback Restaurant 315 Maple Avenue, East October 29 8:10 p.m. A customer reported that the estranged wife of her boyfriend had been in the bar and assaulted her by grabbing her arm and yelling at her.

MPO Shaw responded and informed the woman of the warrant process should she wish to pursue charges.

Domestic Assault 14-012135 Vienna Elementary School 128 Center Street, South October 29 8:45 p.m.

A resident reported that his estranged wife had run up behind him and pulled the hood of his sweatshirt causing him to fall to the ground.

MPO Shaw responded and spoke with both individuals. The estranged wife denied the husbands allegations. The husband was informed of the warrant process should he wish to pursue charges.

Found Property 14-012132 100 Block Maple Avenue, East October 29 8:58 p.m. A Fairfax County Sheriff’s Deputy, working the Halloween Parade detail, turned in a key that had been found in the parking lot.

Found Property 14-012133 Maple Avenue at Park Street, SE October 29 8:59 p.m. A Fairfax County Sheriff’s Deputy, working the Halloween Parade detail, turned in backpack and blanket that had been found in the parking lot.

Police Service 14-012148 The Vienna Police Department 215 Center Street, South October 30 12:35 p.m. A resident dropped off unused ammunition for destruction.

Found Property 14-012153 200 Block Cedar Lane, SE October 30 2:31 p.m. Officer Digan responded to collect a wallet that had been found in the parking lot.

The owner was contacted and will make arrangements to pick up the wallet.

Medical Case 14-012164 200 Block Locust Street, SE October 30 9:18 p.m. Officer Slebonick responded for a resident who was in medical distress.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue personnel transported the resident to an area hospital for treatment.

Arrest – Domestic Assault 14-012167 Melody Lane, SW October 30 9:53 p.m. A resident reported that she and her grandson had been involved in a heated argument that turned physical when he shut a door on her hand.

Officer Slebonick responded and after speaking with the resident and her grandson he arrested the grandson, who was also in possession of a Schedule I illegal substance.

The grandson was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Domestic Assault and Possession of a Schedule I Controlled Substance and held on a $4,000.00 bond.

Vandalism 14-012360 100 Block Lewis Street, NW October 31 between 6:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. A resident reported that someone had damaged a sign in her front yard and egged her house.

Suspicious Event 14-012357 Cunningham Park Elementary 1001Park Street, SE Between November 01 at 12:00 p.m. and November 05 at 12:00 p.m. An employee reported that while talking to a student the student began talking about his brothers who may have been plotting to commit a crime.

MPO Seitz responded to the home of the student and spoke with one of the brother’s who stated their younger brother must have misunderstood when they were talking about a video game.

Police Service 14-012219 100 Block Wilmar Place, NW November 01 2:52 p.m. Officer Tracy and MPO Seitz responded to the area to serve a Protective Order on a resident.

Animal Case 14-012220 500 Block Maple Avenue, West November 01 3:49 p.m. Officer Tracy responded to the area for a goose that appeared to have an injured leg. The goose was trapped and transported to Pender Exotics for treatment of the injury.

Arrest – Driving While Intoxicated/Refusal 14-012248 500 Block Beulah Road, NE November 02 2:36 p.m. Officer Reedy was on patrol when he observed the driver of a vehicle commit a traffic offense. As a result of that offense he conducted a traffic stop. Upon his interaction with the driver he detected the signs of possible impairment.

After refusing to perform all field sobriety tests Officer Reedy arrested Mr. Alexander D. Terzic, 34, of Brookside Lane in Vienna for Driving While Intoxicated. Mr. Terzic was transported to the Vienna Police Station where he was provided the opportunity to supply a sample of his breath for analysis. Mr. Terzic refused this offer as well.

Mr. Terzic was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Refusal to Submit to a Breath Test and held on a $1,000.00 bond.

Medical Case 14-012259 1200 Block Cottage Street, SW November 02 7:11 p.m. Officer Holcombe responded for the report of a resident that had fallen and may have been injured. Rescue personnel were summoned and provided treatment to the injury.

Suspicious Event 14-012285 100 Block James Drive, SW November 03 12:00 p.m. A resident reported that the caretaker, for his elderly father, had been going into areas of the house that were not necessary for his father’s care.

Officer Digan informed the resident to contact the police department if he found anything missing.

Open Door 14-012284 1400 Block Cottage Street, SW November 03 6:25 p.m. A resident reported that the door to a neighbor’s residence had been standing open for several days. Officer Digan responded and searched the residence but was unable to determine if anything had been disturbed.

The residence was secured and information was left for the homeowner informing them of the incident.

Suspicious Event 14-012300 900 Block LynnHill Court, NE November 04 between 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. A resident reported she received telephone calls from two different individuals. The first caller stated that he had a family member in jail. The resident informed the caller that it was a scam after which she received another call from an individual claiming she had won an undisclosed amount of money. The resident again informed the caller this was a scam.

PFC Vazquez attempted to call the numbers and received no answer.

Animal Case – Quarantine 14-012356 The Hope Center 140 Park Street, SE November 04 9:30 a.m.

An employee reported she had been bitten on the hand by a cat while performing a medical procedure. Unfortunately the cat was unable to be saved and was transported by ACO Barker to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter to be tested for Rabies.

ACO Barker will follow up pending the results of the test.

Suspicious Event 14-012302 Westwood Country Club 800 Maple Avenue, East November 04 12:00 p.m. An employee reported he observed an individual walking through the parking lot and he appeared to be looking into vehicles. When approached and questioned by the employee the individual stated he worked for a demolition company and was hired to do work at the country club however he was unable to provide the name of his company.

The individual left the area prior to the arrival of the police.

Fraud 14-012313 Rite Aid Pharmacy 215 Maple Avenue, West November 04 2:45 p.m. An employee reported a customer had been in the pharmacy and may have been the victim of a scam.

PFC Vazquez responded and located the customer who informed him she had received a telephone call from an individual claiming to be with the IRS. The caller stated she owed the IRS money and if the debt was not satisfied she would be arrested.

PFC Vazquez informed her that the telephone had been a scam.

Animal Case 14-012352 100 Block East Street, NE November 05 12:59 p.m. ACO Barker responded for the report of a dog that had been tethered outside near the corner of a residence. Upon his arrival the dog had been taken inside.

ACO Barker spoke with the owner who informed him that after walking the dog she would leave him outside to cool off prior to taking him in the house. She informed him she would put the dog in the back yard in the future.

Trespassing 14-012354 CVS 337 Maple Avenue, East November 05 1:38 p.m. An employee reported he was approached by a female in the store who began yelling at him and accused him of stealing her identity.

MPO Shaver responded and after speaking with both the female and the employee he informed her, at the request of the employee, she was no longer permitted on the property.

Civil 14-012377 600 Block Truman Circle, SW November 06 8:16 a.m. A resident reported that a contractor, who had performed work on his residence, was demanding money for work completed and was refusing to leave until he was paid.

PFC Lyons responded and spoke with both parties involved who admitted that a contract had never been created for the work to be done.

PFC Lyons advised both parties this was a civil matter. The resident requested the contractor be informed to leave the property and never return.

CRASHES

Maple Avenue at Nutley Street, SW 14-012128 October 29 8:36 p.m. The driver of a vehicle was traveling east bound on Maple Avenue attempting to make a right turn onto Nutley Street, SW.

A bicyclist was traveling south bound on Nutley Street and entered the intersection with Maple Avenue and was struck by the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle was issued a summons for Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

Maple Avenue near Branch Road, SE 14-012147 October 30 11:43 a.m. The drivers of two vehicles were traveling west bound on Maple Avenue in the same lane of traffic.

The driver of the first vehicle stopped to make a left turn into a parking lot and was rear ended by the second vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle was issued a summons for Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

Locust Street at Cottage Street, SW 14-012118 October 30 5:19 p.m. The driver of the first vehicle was traveling north bound on Cottage Street and stopped for the stop sign with Locust Street, SW.

The driver of the second vehicle was traveling east bound on Locust Street and stopped for the stop sign with Cottage Street, SW.

An independent witness stated the driver of the first vehicle proceeded through the intersection as the second vehicle accelerated, entered the intersection and collided with the first vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle was issued a summons for Failure to Yield at a Stop Sign.

Beulah Road at Church Street, NE 14-012191 October 31 2:37 p.m. The driver of the first vehicle was traveling south bound on Beulah Road and entered the intersection with Church Street, NE.

The driver of the second vehicle was traveling west bound on Church Street and failed to stop at the red traffic signal and collided with the first vehicle.

East Street near Creek Crossing Road, NE 14-012211 November 01 5:10 a.m. The driver of the first vehicle was legally parked when he was rear ended by the second vehicle.

Spring Street near Moore Avenue, SE 14-012216 November 01 9:46 a.m. The owner of a legally parked vehicle returned to her vehicle to find it had been struck by an unknown vehicle.

Follin Lane at Echols Street, SE 14-012277 November 03 3:22 p.m. The driver of the first vehicle was traveling south bound on Follin Lane approaching the intersection with Echols Street, SE.

The driver of the second vehicle was traveling north bound on Follin Lane and attempted to turn left onto Echols Street, SE and collided with the first vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle was issued a summons for Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

Lawyers Road at Church Street, NW 14-012282 November 03 5:42 p.m. The driver of the first vehicle was traveling north bound on Lawyers Road approaching the intersection with Church Street, NW.

The driver of the second vehicle was traveling east bound on Church Street approaching the intersection with Lawyers Road, NW. The driver of the second vehicle stated he stopped at the stop sign and then proceeded through the intersection and collided with the first vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle was issued a summons for Failure to Yield the Right of Way at a Stop Sign.

Maple Avenue at Nutley Street, West 14-012312 November 04 3:11p.m. The driver of the first vehicle was traveling west bound on Maple Avenue in the center turn lane.

The driver of the second vehicle was exiting a parking lot onto Maple Avenue and collided with the first vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle was issued a summons for Failure to Yield the Right of Way.

Cottage Street near Scott Circle, SW 14-012321 November 04 11:35 p.m. The owner of a legally parked vehicle returned to her vehicle and discovered it had been struck by an unknown vehicle.

OF INTEREST/CITIZEN NOTES

Note to Citizens – Recently there have been reports of callers claiming to be employees of the IRS. The callers claim the resident has either committed tax fraud or had improperly filed previous tax returns. The caller informs the resident to send a Western Union payment or purchase a prepaid debit card, for payment, or the resident will be arrested. This type of call is a scam. Never send a payment unless you have verified the validity of the caller.

Note to Citizens: Please remove all valuables from an unattended vehicle and most importantly, lock the vehicle doors.
