Lane, Ramp Closures Continue This Week For I-66 Outside The Beltway Project

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — As work continues on different segments of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project, I-66 and I-495 lane and ramp closures are planned this week through Dec. 17.

The Virginia Department of Transportation's Transform 66 Outside the Beltway project is adding Express Lanes alongside regular lanes on I-66 between I-495 and University Boulevard in Gainesville with an expected opening in December 2022. Construction updates on different segments of I-66 are shared on the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project website.

One of the continuing impacts is related to bridge beam installation at the I-66/495 interchange. There will be lane and ramp closures on northbound I-495 and eastbound I-66 overnight from Dec. 13 to 17. This segment of the project includes providing connections between Express and general lanes. Crews are working on a new flyover ramp from northbound I-495 to westbound I-66.

Overnight through Dec. 17, ramps from eastbound I-66 to northbound I-495 and from northbound I-495 to westbound I-66 will be closed from 11 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. The ramp from northbound I-495 to eastbound I-66 will be closed 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly. Drivers can use detour routes to get around the ramp closures.

In addition, northbound I-495 will be reduced to two lanes approaching I-66 during overnight hours. Two lanes will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

More travel impacts continue with the old Gallows Road Bridge demolition over I-66. The Gallows Road bridge is being widened, raised and shifted to the east to accommodate the new I-66 Express Lanes and future Gallows Road improvements. During overnight hours from Dec. 13 to 17, crews are removing bridge beams over I-66 West and the Metro Orange Line and Dunn Loring Metro Station.

From Dec. 13 to Dec. 18, three lanes of westbound I-66 will be closed 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Periodic stoppages of up to 20 minutes will occur through Thursday night between 11 p.m. and 4:30 a.m. and Friday between 11 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.

In addition, the ramp from southbound I-495 to westbound I-66 will be reduced to one lane nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Friday and Saturday. The ramp from the 495 Express Lanes to westbound I-66 will be closed 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
