Madison Girls' Lacrosse Topples McLean in Overtime, Fourth Straight Win

With 30 seconds left in sudden-death overtime, the Madison Warhawks scored against rival McLean to win 10-9 at home on April 15.
The victory capped off Senior Night festivities honoring Andie Battin, Hailey Swaak, Shannon Condon, Jacqueline Schultz and manager Jisu Kim.
The Warhawks trailed 1-5 at the half, frustrated by a strong Highlander defense, but pushed hard in the second half to tie the game in regulation time.

Anya Saponja made the final goal off an interception by Diana Lowther. Saponja had another goal earlier in the second half, along with Zoe Dyer, Carly Rogers and Caroline Turner, who had 2 each. Logan Hanton had the Warhawks’ lone goal in the first half and also provided an assist, as did Dyer.
Defenders Condon, Swaak, Caroline Kurtz, Laurel Yano and Caitlin Blankenship contained the Highlanders at key moments. Goalie Ellie Socher had 6 saves.

This is Madison’s fourth consecutive win, having recently bested Fairfax (22-2), South Lakes (11-8) and Yorktown (15-12).
Since early April, the Warhawks have been powered by goals from Rogers, Hanton, Dyer, Saponja, Turner, Lowther, Annabelle Bentley, Grace Knicely, Olivia Choutka, Grace McDonough, McKenna Nolan, and Bailey Brummer, with multiple assists by Battin, Saponja, Turner, Rogers, Hanton, Lowther and Ashley Go.
