Man Threatens Shooting At Merrifield Center: Police

Fairfax County Police immediately detained the man at his home.

MERRIFIELD, VA—A man is facing charges after threats to shoot up or bomb the Merrifield Center Friday, Dec. 21.

Around 11:40 a.m., Fairfax County Police were notified a man called the Merrifield Crisis Response Center. He reportedly threatened to shoot up the building with an AK-47 or use explosives if he did not talk to somebody.

Officers went to his home, where the man walked outside. Police detained the suspect, who smelled of alcohol. A BB gun was the only item found in a search of his home.

The suspect, identified as Carlos Portillo, 35, of Fairfax, was charged with threats to bomb and drunk in public.

The Fairfax - Falls Church Community Services Board's Merrifield Center offers treatment and services including outpatient services and support, screening and assessment services, and 24/7 emergency services and Merrifield Crisis Response Center.
