Merrifield Gunman Is From Vienna: Police

VIENNA, VA—The gunman in Wednesday's shooting in Merrifield has been identified as a Vienna man. John Francis Wood, 52, of Vienna died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No other injuries were reported when the shooter reportedly begin firing at a law office house in a building that also contains a preschool.

Around 4:50 p.m. police received reports of a man firing multiple shots from a pistol at a fourth floor law office at 8111 Gatehouse Road. Officers encountered the shooter already deceased on the fourth floor.

Police are interviewing witnesses in attempts to determine a motive.

Hundreds of people had to evacuate the building, including children at the Falls Church Merrifield Preschool. Children were ushered to a nearby middle school to reunite with their parents.
