Reading Express - Celebrating Advances in Literacy
Assistance League of Northern Virginia holds end of year party for students enrolled in Reading Express program at Providence Elementary.
Students and volunteer tutors with Assistance League of Northern Virginia enjoyed a fun Reading Express event held on May 10th at Providence Elementary School in Fairfax. This annual end of year celebration recognizes the accomplishments of 30 first grade students enrolled in the nonprofit’s literacy program during the 2015-16 school year. The party featured an entertaining story read aloud by enthusiastic member volunteers and an interactive session highlighting the benefits of summer reading. Members also surprised the students with a special gift bag which included a new book, a bookmark and a hand-knit indoor flying disc. The expression of joy on each child's face was priceless. President Pat Thompson thanked Mary Ann Cadin, Project Coordinator, and the team of ten dedicated tutors, substitute tutors and administrators for donating their time on Tuesday mornings to help a child in need.
Reading Express is a books-on-tape program coupled with individualized tutoring for identified students who need extra support to advance their reading and language skills.
