Route 7 Widening Project Prompts Overnight Lane Closures

Lane closures began this week for the Route 7 project, which includes adding a third lane in each direction on a seven-mile stretch.

VIENNA, VA — If you're traveling on Leesburg Pike at night, expect to see ongoing construction activity. Overnight construction work began for the Route 7 improvement project between Tysons and Reston on Monday, Oct. 7. The project, which will add a third lane in each direction, is focused on seven miles of Route 7 between Jarrett Valley Drive in Vienna and Reston Avenue.

Construction activities will start in the section of Route 7 between Jarrett Valley Drive and Reston Avenue. Other work will happen on side streets along Route 7.

The overnight construction will prompt lane closures on these nights:

  • Sunday through Thursday nights: 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Friday nights: 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. or other off-peak hours
  • Saturday nights: 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. or other off-peak hours

The speed limit in active work zones between Delta Glen Court and Reston Avenue has been reduced to 45 mph. Fairfax County has granted a noise waiver for the overnight construction activity.

The Route 7 project kicked off over the summer and is expected to be completed in 2024. The first of the improvements, a third left-turn lane to Baron Cameron Avenue, has already opened. For more information and to sign up for email updates, visit connectroute7.org.
