Sick Raccoons, IRS Scam Call, Barking Dogs: Vienna Crime Report

Also, a cab driver gets struck in the head by a customer; here's a look at the week in crime, from the Town of Vienna Police.

The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna, Virginia Police Department from December 19, 2015 – December 23, 2015. Readers are reminded that an “arrest” is based upon probable cause and does not always mean that someone was physically taken into custody. Furthermore, it does not mean that an individual is automatically guilty of a crime. Judicial outcomes and post-arrest proceedings can be researched through the appropriate court’s website.

Arrest – Drunk in Public 15-012295 The Bey Lounge 303 Mill Street, NE December 17 between 11:29 p.m. and 11:45 p.m. Officers had previously responded for a noise complaint. A short time later an employee advised of a problem with a customer who refused to leave.

MPO Seitz observed that the man appeared to be intoxicated. The officer suggested the man leave the establishment with his friend who was offering to take him home. However, the man refused and was placed under arrest.

MPO Seitz transported the 25 year old man from Old Meadow Road in McLean, VA to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Drunk In Public and was to be held until he was sober.

Police Service 15-012314 Wolftrap Hotel 430 Maple Avenue, West Between December 17 at 7:00 p.m. and December 18 at 11:26 a.m. A citizen reported that her vehicle was stolen from the parking lot of the hotel.

A short time later, officers found the citizen’s vehicle parked in another local parking lot. The vehicle appeared to be undisturbed and the citizen believes she must have forgotten where she had parked it.

Animal Case 15-012309 700 Block Hunter Court, SW December 18 9:15 a.m. ACO Barker received a complaint of a sick raccoon. He located the animal in the yard and determined it could not be saved. The animal was transported to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter.

Civil Matter 15-012315 Wilmar Place, NW December 18 11:34 a.m. A resident advised that her ex-husband picked up their children from school and refused to return them to her for the weekend, violating their custody agreement.

The resident was advised this was a civil matter.

Medical Case 15-012322 DeSale Street, SW December 18 2:38 p.m. A local hospital reported that a resident was stating to them that she was having thoughts about harming herself. Officers spoke to the resident who stated that she wanted to seek medical attention.

MPO Smith transported the resident to a local medical facility, where she was evaluated. After being treated, arrangements were made for the resident to stay with family and follow up with her doctor.

Animal Case 15-012327 500 Block Brentwood Court, NW December 18 5:04 p.m. ACO Barker responded for the report of a sick raccoon. He located the raccoon in the yard in very poor health.

ACO Barker transported the animal to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter where it was euthanized.

Natural Death 15-012329 300 Block Center Street, North December 18 6:28 p.m. Officer Post responded to the residence after receiving a report of an elderly female who had passed away. After speaking to the family she determined there were no signs of foul play.

A detective will follow up with the case.

Medical Case 15-012331 Wilmar Place, NW December 18 7:12 p.m. A citizen requested officers respond to their daughter’s residence to check on her welfare, as they felt she may have attempted to hurt herself.

When officers arrived the resident was already being evaluated by EMS personnel from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue. The resident advised she was just upset over some recent events, but she was fine and did not wish to hurt herself. The resident refused to be transported for further medical evaluation.

Domestic Dispute 15-012379 DeSale Street, SW December 19 9:59 a.m. Officers responded for a domestic dispute. A citizen advised he was upset that his children were not ready to be picked up at the time that was agreed upon for their custody exchange.

The children’s mother advised that their father confronted a family member in the back yard, and was banging on the side entrance door to the residence.

The man agreed to abide by the custody agreement and wait for his children at his vehicle.

Case Update; The resident obtained a warrant charging Trespassing against the father. The warrant was served on December 19 at 9:59 p.m. by Officer Post. The officer transported the 55 year old man from Center Street, North in Vienna to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was released on a $1500 unsecured bond.

Fraud 15-012431 700 Block Upham Place, NW Between December 19 at 12:00 p.m. and December 20 at 12:15 p.m. A resident reported that unauthorized charges had been placed to one of his credit card accounts.

This case is being investigated by our department.

Mental Case 15-012389 200 Block Cedar Lane, SE December 19 12:59 p.m. A relative reported concern for his brother who he believed was going to harm himself with a weapon he had in the residence.

Mental health professionals were requested at the residence to assist the officers in helping the man. The man immediately became aggressive and combative and was taken into custody on a Temporary Detention Order.

Officer Tremont and Sgt. Sheeran transported the 24 year old man to a local hospital where he was released to the custody of the hospital staff.

Suspicious Event 15-012477 Emmaus Church 900 Maple Avenue, East December 20 11:30 a.m.

On December 21 a pastor at the Church advised officers about a man who had come into the sanctuary during services the previous day acting suspicious.

He advised the man interacted with some of the Church members, but became angry and was ranting. He eventually left the building.

Grand Larceny 15-12472 Whole Foods Market 143 Maple Avenue, East December 21 between 1:00 p.m. and 1:58 p.m. A citizen reported that her wallet was stolen from her purse while she was shopping.

This case is being investigated.

Suspicious Event 15-12478 200 Block Hillside Circle, SW December 21 4:47 p.m. A resident reported she received a telephone call from an individual claiming to work for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The resident hung up on the caller and when she tried to call the number back she received a message that the number is disconnected.

Animal Case 15-012482 500 Block Ayr Hill Avenue, NE December 22 12:05 a.m. Officers responded for the report of barking dogs. Once the dogs were able to get back into the residence they stopped barking.

ACO Barker will follow up on this case.

Assault 15-012525 James Madison Shell 545 Maple Avenue, West December 23 02:11 a.m.

A taxi cab driver reported being assaulted after transporting four males who appeared to be intoxicated. Three of the individuals requested to be dropped off at the Shell station. After the fare was paid one of the men struck the cab driver in the back of the head. The three males then left the area.

The fourth individual stayed with the cab driver. He advised he had just met the other men and did not know their names or where they lived.

Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the individuals.

Petit Larceny 15-012537 200 Block Mill Street, NE December 23 8:24 p.m. A citizen reported his wallet was stolen from his unlocked vehicle.

Domestic Assault 15-012542 Alma Street, SE December 23 10:56 p.m. Officers responded to a report of a domestic assault between husband and wife. The husband advised his wife struck him on the back with her hand after he had taken her cell phone during an argument.

Officers observed the husband had suffered minor injury from the assault and placed the wife under arrest. The 39 year old woman was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where the magistrate refused to issue a warrant. The woman was then transported back to her home.

The wife agreed to spend the night away from the home to allow the situation to calm down.
