Question: How can I get my hair to look like it does when I leave the salon?
This is a question that I have heard even before I was a hairdresser. Haircutting skill and technique aside, usually a hairstylist is styling your hair based on their hair styling abilities. Also, the stylist usually uses multiple products on your hair to gain control over the hairʼs movement. Once you are at home, you are styling your hair based on the haircut, your own styling techniques, and your existing cowlicks, texture and growth patterns.
One difference between otherʼs haircutting techniques and mine is that I believe in involving the client before, during, and after the haircut. We go beyond the, “What do you what to do with your hair” question. Before I cut your hair, I need to see what you see. I need to see how you move your hair. In other words, I need to see how you deal with your hair. All aspects of the hairʼs personality are taken into consideration. After the haircut, I ask you to to comb your wet hair because I need to see how your hair falls when you use your techniques. During the hair drying process, I do not use any gel, mouse, oil, etc. If your hair is going to be difficult in certain areas, I need to see this now. I do not want to tame, flatten or fluff through the growth patterns, waves, or cowlicks. After your hair is dry, I ask you again to comb your hair, which is the the finishing touch. During this entire process, the client has been involved, and has used their own styling method, which makes a tremendous difference on how easily their salon style can be duplicated at home. I really believe that it is all about the haircut.
