These NoVA, DC Stores Will Be Open On Thanksgiving 2019

WASHINGTON, DC — While Thanksgiving is generally set aside as a time with family and friends, watching football and eating too much turkey, many major retailers plan to open on Nov. 28 in hopes of luring shoppers eager to score major Black Friday deals. Patch has the hour that retailers have confirmed they'll open the doors on the holiday, and we'll update the list throughout the month.

Stores in northern Virginia and the District of Columbia that will remain open on Turkey Day include pharmacies, clothing chains and home accessories retailers, according to BestBlackFriday.com, a website dedicated to tracking news and trends related to spending on Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Among the stores that will be open on Thanksgiving 2019 are Bed Bath and Beyond, DSW and Old Navy.

"Thanksgiving Day continues to be big business for retailers which remain open, as well as those who offer giant savings and discounts online. In 2018, Thanksgiving Day generated 3.7 billion in online sales," BestBlackFriday noted.

Turkey Day sales are expected to go up even more in 2019, according to a recent forecast from Adobe. The computer software company projected Thanksgiving Day sales will increase by 19.5 percent this year, generating $4.4 billion. Adobe's predictions are based on an analysis of over 1 trillion visits to retail sites.

Despite the increase in sales, a survey conducted by BestBlackFriday found only 28 percent of polled shoppers think stores should remain open on Thanksgiving. That number is up 3 percent compared to the site's same survey a year ago.

Here is the most recently updated list of stores that will be open on Thanksgiving in DC and northern Virginia, according to BestBlackFriday.

• Bed Bath and Beyond (first year open on Thanksgiving)
• CVS (some open 24 hours)
• DSW (most open at 5 p.m.)
• Gordmans
• Macy's (most open at 5 p.m. and stay open through Saturday)
• Mattress Firm
• New York & Company (some open at 6 p.m., others at 6 a.m. on Black Friday)
• Old Navy (open at 3 p.m. and staying open until 11 p.m. Friday night)
• RiteAid (some open 24 hours)
• Walgreens (some open 24 hours)

Good Housekeeping says these stores will be open on Thanksgiving, as well:

• Big Lots: Last year, select locations were open 7 a.m. to midnight.
• Dollar General: Stores will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
• Five Below: The store should open at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving and stay open until 1 a.m. the following day.
• JCPenney: Stores will open at 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving and will stay open until 10 p.m. on Black Friday.
• Kohl's: Most stores will open at 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving.
• Lilly Pulitzer: Some locations will be open on Thanksgiving Day. Contact your local store for holiday hours.
• Michaels: Typically opens at 6 p.m.
• Target: In the past, locations have opened at 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving.
• Ulta: The beauty store usually opens at 6 p.m. on the holiday.
• Victoria's Secret: Most stores should be open at 5 p.m.
• Walmart: Walmart usually opens at 6 p.m.
• Whole Foods Market: All stores will be open this year, but hours will vary.

BestBlackFriday says Gamestop and Sears have been open on Thanksgiving Day in past years, and likely will be in 2019, but it's not yet confirmed.

A few states — Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Maine — go so far as to ban stores from opening on the Thanksgiving holiday.
