Throwback: President George H.W. Bush Visits Madison High (Video)

The 41st president had lunch with students and answered questions during a surprise visit in 1989.

VIENNA, VA—As the country remembers the late President George H.W. Bush, we're taking a look back on his visit to Vienna.

Madison High School students got a surprise when the 41st president showed up in March 1989. Fairfax County Public Schools shared video highlights of Bush's visit.

Bush started with a visit to an Advanced Placement computer science before moving to the library for a Q&A session with government students. The question topics ranged from foreign policy to drugs.

His visit ended at the cafeteria, where he ate pizza and French fries alongside students. According to a newscaster, "an appreciative Madison student body gave him a warm send off as he headed back to the White House."

The former president died Friday at the age of 94, preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Barbara, who died in April. Mourners paid their respects to the late Bush as he was lying in state at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda through Wednesday morning. His body was taken to the National Cathedral for a memorial service with family and friends at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

His body will be flown back to Houston and buried behind Bush Library at Texas A&M alongside his wife, Barbara, and daughter, Robin, who died in 1953 at the age of 3.
