Thunderstorm Flooding Causes Road Closures In Fairfax County

BREAKING: An early afternoon thunderstorm resulted in flooding and road closures around the county.

A thunderstorm swept through the region Tuesday afternoon and didn't take long to flood roads and prompt closures in Fairfax County. Police have announced a number of road closures around the county as of 2:50 p.m.:

  • Woodburn Road between Spicewood Drive and Frost Way, Annandale: Water in the roadway
  • 6600 block of Bull Run Post Office Road, Centreville: Water in the roadway
  • Bull Run Drive and Brim Lane, Centreville, Water in the roadway
  • Lee Highway under I-66, Centreville: Water in the roadway
  • 15000 block of Compton Road, Centreville: Water in the roadway
  • Lee Highway at Clifton Road, Clifton: Water in the roadway
  • Fox Mill Road at Folkstone Drive, Hunter Mill: Water in the roadway
  • 3700 block of Prosperity Avenue, Fairfax: Water in the roadway
  • Woodhill Place at Morningside Drive, Fairfax: Water in the roadway
  • Old Dominion Drive at Dolley Madison Boulevard, McLean: Water in the roadway
  • Swinks Mill Road at Georgetown Pike, McLean: Water in the roadway
  • Lawyers Road at Hunter Mill Road, Vienna: Water in the roadway

A flood warning is in effect through 7:15 p.m. Tuesday for Fairfax County and other parts of the region. The National Weather Service says runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses in addition to other drainage areas and low lying spots.

Officials remind drivers to "turn around, don't drown" when encountering flooded roads. Just six inches of fast-moving floodwaters can knock over an adult.
