Vienna artist Chris Brandell to Exhibit in New York City this June!
NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea's Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Vienna artist Chris Brandell in Pathway to Abstraction.
In her work, Chris Brandell lets her paints and their colors take the lead. Working with acrylics and oils on canvas, the artist puts her materials to expressive use in her multi-layered abstract paintings. Balancing drips, bold brush strokes, and soft fields of color, she gives each image a strongly tactile quality. Brandell applies her paints with custom-made knives, trowels and brushes, allowing her to use a variety of effects to give her images surface textures and a strong impression of light, space, and movement.
Brandell's use of color also plays a large role in the vitality of her paintings. “Color vibrates in my head - I can hear it and feel it and see it everywhere,” she says. Those vibrations are realized in her images, whether it is through the juxtaposition of contrasting colors or the variety she teases from one color’s range of intensities. Interpreting “the complexity of the human dynamic” is the goal Brandell sets for herself, and her ability to create images that are both carefully orchestrated and seemingly spontaneous brings that complexity to life.
Born in New York, Brandell currently lives and works in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. in Virginia.

About the Exhibition
Pathway to Abstraction: Setting the course for a new view of abstract art
In Pathway to Abstraction, nine artists display divergent, yet related, views of what abstraction means in the 21st century. From experiments in pure color and form to paintings that turn depictions of the outside world into subtle arrangements of textures and shapes, their images take the practice of abstract art in new directions that challenge and surprise the viewer. With approaches that encompass acrylics, oils, giclée prints and digital photography, each artist has a strong personal vision. The spontaneity that abstraction permits can be seen in all of their work, but that freedom is channeled in an impressive variety of ways. Sharp, bold graphic patterns will predominate in one artist’s work, while soft, elusive clouds of color will set the tone in another’s. There is an equally broad range of textures on display, from smooth blocks of acrylics, to shells attached to the surface of a seaside scene. The conversation that results when these approaches are brought together shines a light on where abstraction is heading.
