Vienna Community Center Opening Delayed Until October
Daily operations at the Vienna Community Center are being delayed, although the ribbon cutting is still on.

VIENNA, VA—The Vienna Community Center's opening is being delayed until October, but the ribbon cutting will go on as planned on Sept. 23.
Originally, the town had anticipated parks and recreation classes would start Sept. 18. Oct. 2 is the new expected kickoff date.
Officials say the incorrect installation of the fire pump control panel has delayed the re-opening. The item has to be re-ordered and replaced before the fire marshal's office will grant the necessary permits. The fire marshal has approved use of the facility for the ribbon cutting.

“Of course, we’re disappointed that the community center won’t be up and running as soon as we had planned, and we understand that our residents will be disappointed, too," said Parks and Recreation Director Leslie Herman in a statement. "This is just one final hiccup and in the big scheme of things – when you consider what folks in Texas and Florida have recently been through – it’s not the end of the world. We know that the completed community center is going to wow the community and will serve once again as a vibrant, efficient, fun community-gathering place.”
The renovated facility will be 15,000 square feet larger and is anticipated to become LEED certified. Renovations and additions include:
- A new gym with a basketball court and walking track
- A lobby and waiting area with a service counter
- New backboards, rims, flooring, lighting and other equipment in the old gym
- New chairs, carpeting, paneling, control room, sound, and lights in the 200-seat auditorium
- A new, zoned heating and air system
- New and renovated bathrooms with a family changing room
- New kitchen
- Additional staff office space
- Larger meeting room space
- Improved lighting and information technology capabilities in auditorium
Built in 1966, the community center has been additions over the years such as a lounge room, music room, auditorium and the Club Phoenix Teen Center.
The community is invited to the ribbon cutting Saturday, Sept. 23 from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. The town will celebrate with musical performances, class demos and expo, tours, food, giveaways and more.
The community center is located at 120 Cherry Street SE. See more information about the project on the Town of Vienna's website.
