Vienna Crime: Credit Card Fraud, Trespassing at Southside Park + More

The week in crime in the Town of Vienna, from the Town of Vienna Police Department weekly crime report.

The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna, Virginia Police Department from June 19, 2015 – June 25, 2015. Readers are reminded that an “arrest” is based upon probable cause and does not always mean that someone was physically taken into custody. Furthermore, it does not mean that an individual is automatically guilty of a crime. Judicial outcomes and post-arrest proceedings can be researched through the appropriate court’s website.

INCIDENTS

Grand Larceny 15-006189 County Transmissions 320 Dominion Road, NE Between February 01 at 9:00 a.m. and May 31 at 9:00 a.m. An employee reported a theft of parts and services.

This case is being investigated.

Fraud 15-006158 300 Block Locust Street, SE Between March 01 at 11:27 a.m. and June 15 at 11:27 a.m. A resident became aware that someone had made several fraudulent charges against her Suntrust Credit Card account.

This case is being investigated.

Grand Larceny 15-006242 Vienna Police Department 215 Center Street, South Between April 01 at 12:00 a.m. and April 30 at 11:59 a.m. A citizen reported she had been in the Vienna area during the month of April. She stated an individual known to her had taken her identification and credit cards and may have used the credit cards without her permission. She was unable to provide the location or date when this incident occurred.

This case is being investigated.

Petit Larceny 15-006083 400 Block Dominion Road, SE Between June 13 at 1:00 p.m. and June 19 at 1:34 p.m. MPO Shaw responded to the area after receiving a report of several juveniles who were suspected of smoking cigarettes and drinking beer. Upon arriving he determined none of the juveniles were in possession of cigarettes or alcohol. However, one of the juveniles was found to be in possession of a basket full of merchandise taken from Michael’s.

The merchandise was returned to Michael’s and an employee stated charges would not be pursued.

Computer Case 15-006080 Vienna Police Station 215 Center Street, South Between June 14 at 12:30 p.m. and June 17 at 6:00 p.m. A resident reported that while she and her estranged husband were in the process of separating he erased all the files from her Laptop computer and telephone.

This case is being investigated.

Juvenile Case – Runaway 15-006091 Hillcrest Drive, SW Between June 17 at 6:30 a.m. and June 19 at 9:09 a.m. A resident reported she had not seen her son since he left for school on Wednesday, June 17th, at around 6:30 a.m. She stated she believed he may have been staying with his girlfriend in Fairfax, Virginia. Officer Digan responded to the girlfriend’s home and was informed by her sister he had stayed at the house but has since left with his girlfriend.

This case is being investigated.

Case Update:

On June 25th at approximately 2:20 a.m., Officer Herrera was notified by the Arlington County Police that they located the juvenile who had been reported as a runaway on June 17th. The Arlington County Police Department transported the juvenile to Officer Herrera and custody was transferred over to the Vienna Police Department.

The juvenile was transported to the Fairfax County Juvenile Detention Center and held on a Probation Violation. His mother was notified that her son had been found and was safe.

Grand Larceny 15-006234 400 Block Lawyers Road, NW Between June 17 at 11:30 a.m. and June 24 at 1:51 p.m. A resident reported while he was at physical therapy he believes someone took his watch from his home.

This case is being investigated.

Juvenile Case 15-006032 Windover Avenue at West Street, NW June 17 5:15 p.m. PFC Tracy responded to the area after receiving a report of juveniles throwing objects from a window into the street below. Upon arriving three juveniles were seen leaving the residence. MPO Shaver and PFC Tracy stopped the juveniles and after speaking with them, their parents were notified.

The children were counselled on the seriousness of their actions and released to their parents.

Destruction of Property 15-006042 McDonald’s 544 Maple Avenue, West June 18 1:40 a.m. An employee reported a customer entered the McDonald’s and then left prior to receiving his meal. The customer returned to pick up his meal and when informed he had not yet paid, he became irate. The customer then yelled at the employees and smashed a cookie jar on the ground.

After smashing the jar the man ran from the store. Officers canvassed the area but were unable to locate him.

Welfare Check 15-006056 100 Block Harmony Drive, SE June 18 1:01 p.m. A resident responded to the Vienna Police Station to report she had seen her elderly neighbor drive away from her home on June 16th but she had not yet returned. The resident was concerned as her neighbor is not known to travel for any length of time.

Case Update:

On June 19th Lt. Marsh received a call from the resident. She informed him her neighbor had sent an email informing them she had fallen while getting gas. She was transported to an area hospital for treatment of an injury suffered in the fall.

Fraud 15-006084 100 Block Yeonas Drive, SE June 18 6:00 p.m. A resident reported she attempted to file her federal taxes and was informed a tax return had already been filed by someone using her personal identification.

This case is being investigated.

Juvenile Case 15-006064 McDonald’s 544 Maple Avenue, West June 18 6:15 p.m. PFC Tracy responded to the area after receiving a report from employees that a group of juveniles had been walking through the parking lot, causing trouble and appeared to be intoxicated. Upon arriving in the area PFC Tracy was informed the juveniles had crossed Maple Avenue and were heading towards the Arrowhead Apartments.

After locating the juveniles he observed one extremely intoxicated boy attempting to start a fight with another boy. PFC Tracy attempted to calm the intoxicated boy to no avail, having no other option he was placed in handcuffs until he calmed down.

PFC Tracy contacted a relative of the juvenile who responded to the area and agreed to take him home. He was informed petitions for Disorderly Conduct, Underage Possession of Alcohol and Resisting Arrest would be sought.

Suspicious Event 15-006065 100 Block Church Street, NW June 18 7:20 p.m. A resident reported that while driving on Maple Avenue she became involved in an altercation with the driver of another vehicle. She stated the other driver was in front of her and stopped at a red traffic signal. When the light turned green the driver did not move, she in turn beeped her horn to alert him. He responded with a hand gesture and drove off.

She stated at the next red traffic signal the driver stopped abruptly, resulting in another exchange of hand gestures and unkind words, which she believed to be a threatening. After the second altercation she attempted followed the driver, who left the area before the arrival of the police.

Officer Reedy informed the woman of the warrant process should she wish to pursue the case.

Animal Case 15-006077 The Hope Center 140 Park Street, SE June 18 8:30 p.m. ACO Barker transported a kitten to the Fairfax County Animal Control Center to be tested for Rabies.

Trespassing 15-006074 Southside Park 1317 Ross Drive, SW Between June 18 at 9:00 p.m. and June 19 at 6:39 a.m. MPO Shaw responded to the Southside Park after receiving a report of an individual who had pitched a tent in the Gazebo and had been camping for the evening.

The individual was identified and stated he was “on a spiritual journey” and was not aware he had been trespassing. The man was counselled on trespassing in a park after dark and then released to continue on his journey.

Arrest - Narcotics Violation 15-006069 Outback Steakhouse 315 Maple Avenue, East June 18 10:06 p.m. A customer at the restaurant reported he had gone into the men’s restroom and discovered a man lying unconscious on the floor in one of the stalls. The customer stated a shoelace had been wrapped around his arm and a needle was lying on the floor next to his arm. The unconscious man regained consciousness, as the police were arriving, and attempted to flee the area. After a brief foot pursuit PFC Kiley apprehended the individual outside the Giant Food Store.

While speaking with the individual he stated he had been suffering from fainting spells and requested he be transported to an area hospital. Fairfax County Rescue personnel were summoned and he was transported to an area hospital.

Case Update:

On June 22nd, Officer Lyons arrested the 23 year old man from Colin Lane, NW in Vienna for Possession of a Schedule I, II Controlled Substance (Heroin) and Possession of a Schedule I, II Controlled Substance (Amphetamine Methamphetamines).

He was released on his signature.

Fraud 15-006174 200 Block Audreys Court, SE Between June 18 at 10:44 p.m. and June 22 at 8:44 p.m. A resident stated she had been looking for employment using the website Sittercity.com. She stated she was contacted by a family who told her they had bought a house in the Town of Vienna and would be moving there shortly. She stated the family hired her and sent her a check as an advance. She was later contacted by the wife who informed her she had written the check for too much and asked if she would deposit the check and send the difference back to her.

The resident went to her bank, deposited the check and then wired the requested amount back to the family. She was later informed by her bank her account was overdrawn.

This case is being investigated.

Assist Fire/EMS 15-006070 Shell Gas Station 545 Maple Avenue, West June 19 12:08 a.m. Officer Reedy responded to the Shell Gas Station after receiving a report of a possible explosion. After arriving on the scene he spoke with the lone employee who stated she heard an explosion in one of the service bays and when she went to investigate she observed the flames.

The Fairfax County Fire Department was dispatched to the area and extinguished the flames.

This cause of the fire will be investigated by the Fairfax County Fire Marshall’s Office.

Medical Case 15-006082 100 Block Park Street, SE June 19 11:30 a.m. Police responded to a medical office after a patient made statements suggesting he may want to harm himself.

MPO Shaw responded and after speaking with the patient he requested his sister-in-law be permitted to transport him to an area hospital. The sister-in-law responded and transported him to the hospital.

Open Door 15-006090 AppleTree II Daycare 712 Tapawingo Road, SW June 19 9:06 p.m. An alarm company reported the alarm to the daycare had been activated. Officer Herrera responded and discovered the garage door had been left open. He searched inside the garage and around the outside of the daycare and found nothing out of place.

Officer Herrera was able to secure the garage door prior to leaving.

Arrest – Drunk in Public/Alcohol Violation 15-006102 200 Block Cedar Lane, SE June 20 1:05 a.m. Officer Herrera was on patrol when he observed an individual urinating by the garbage area. After approaching the individual he determined he was intoxicated and under the age of 21. As a result of his intoxication he arrested the 20 year old man from Cedar Lane, SE in Vienna for Drunk in Public.

He was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Drunk in Public and Underage Possession of Alcohol. He was to be held until he was sober.

Found Property 15-006106 7-11 537 Maple Avenue, West June 20 1:45 a.m. An employee reported he found two backpacks abandoned in front of the store.

MPO Smith responded and located the possible names and telephone numbers of the owners. He attempted to contact each individual but neither one answered or returned his messages.

The backpacks will be held at the Vienna Police Station until the owners can be located.

Arrest – Drunk in Public 15-006115 300 Block Park Street, NE June 20 8:01 p.m. MPO Smith responded to the area after receiving a report of two men fighting in the street. Upon arriving in the area he observed two men actively fighting with a third man attempting to separate them.

MPO Smith identified the two men fighting and determined they were intoxicated. As a result of their intoxication he arrested the two 20 year old men from McLean, Virginia for Drunk in Public.

Both men were transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where they were to be held until they were sober.

Arrest – Narcotics Violation 15-006129 Park Street at Elmar Drive, SE June 21 1:02 a.m. Officer Digan was on patrol when he observed a vehicle with an equipment defect. As a result of that defect he conducted a traffic stop. Upon his approach to the vehicle he detected the distinct odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle. After speaking with the driver he located a measurable amount of marijuana.

Officer Digan issued the 21 year old man from Berry Street, SE in Vienna a summons for Possession of Marijuana and released him after obtaining his signature.

Assault 15-006139 Chipotle 213 Maple Avenue, East June 21 5:15 p.m. An employee reported a former employee had entered the restaurant and the two became involved in a heated argument. He stated the former employee had threatened him several times with serious injury. The ex-employee left the restaurant prior to the arrival of the police.

Sgt. Sylmar was in the area and located the ex-employee. He informed Sgt. Sylmar the two had been involved in a verbal argument, however, he denied making any threats.

The employee was informed of the warrant process should he decide to pursue charges.

Petit Larceny 15-006166 200 Block West Street, NW June 21 7:00 p.m. A resident reported someone had entered his unlocked vehicle and stole his sunglasses, replacing them with a cheaper pair.

Mental Case 15-006154 PNC Bank 353 Maple Avenue, East June 22 between 3:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. A citizen responded to the Vienna Police Station to report that she was in her vehicle behind the PNC Bank when someone siphoned the gas from her vehicle and then urinated on the outside of the vehicle.

Officer Reedy responded and spoke with the citizen, who is well known to Vienna Police Officers. He determined the incident was unfounded.

Animal Case – Quarantine 15-006150 Ware Street at Meadow Lane, SW June 22 8:00 a.m. A resident reported she had been watching her mother’s dog “Gucci” for the weekend. She stated Gucci was able to get out of the house and had been lost for a short time. The resident stated an unidentified man found Gucci and as he was attempting to look for a name on the collar, he was bit on the hand.

The man left without providing his information. ACO Barker informed the resident of the quarantine process for Gucci. She stated she would notify her mother and provide her with the quarantine instructions as well.

The Arlington Welfare League will follow up with this case a Gucci is a resident of Arlington, Virginia.

Petit Larceny 15-006168 Walgreens 225 Maple Avenue, West June 22 3:32 p.m. An employee reported a white male with dark hair, wearing a black shirt and jeans entered the store and absconded with an unknown over the counter medication.

The employee informed PFC Kiley they did not wish to pursue charges.

Suspicious Event 15-006169 1000 Block Pickett Place, SW June 22 4:10 p.m. A resident reported an unknown black male had been attempting to enter her neighbor’s home. She stated after the man attempted to enter the front door without success, he attempted to enter the garage using the garage key pad. The man left prior to the arrival of the police.

Officer Reedy attempted to contact the homeowner at the telephone number provided. The homeowner did not answer the call or return his message.

Destruction of Property 15-006197 100 Block Patrick Street, SE June 23 4:10 p.m. A resident reported her legally parked vehicle was struck by stones and rocks by a construction crew drilling the sidewalk.

PFC Kiley responded and spoke with the foreman of the construction company who was not aware of the stones striking her vehicle. He recommended she speak with the owner of the company.

The resident was informed to contact her insurance agency and also of the process to obtain a warrant for Destruction of Property if she wished to pursue charges.
