Vienna Crime: Doe Stuck in Fence, Bus Shelter Damaged, Noise Complaint

Plus police counsel teenage girl on making threatening texts. The week in crime, in Vienna.

The following summary contains various incidents of general interest as well as vehicular crashes handled by the Town of Vienna, Virginia Police Department from September 26, 2014 – October 02, 2014. Readers are reminded that an “arrest” is based upon probable cause and does not always mean that someone was physically taken into custody. Furthermore, it does not mean that an individual is automatically guilty of a crime. Judicial outcomes and post-arrest proceedings can be researched through the appropriate court’s website.

Grand Larceny 14-11073 100 Block Elm Street, SW Between September 18 at 3:00 p.m. and September 27 at 3:00 p.m. A resident reported she had been unloading her car and left the rear hatchback open. When she returned to her vehicle she discovered that her laptop had been taken.

This case is being investigated.

Grand Larceny 14-10883 600 Block Frederick Street, SW Between September 22 at 12:00 p.m. and September 25 at 12:00 p.m. A resident reported that a fire pit and ladder had been taken from her home.

Destruction of Property 14-10825 100 Block Pleasant Street, NW Between September 23 at 7:30 p.m. and September 24 at 7:45 a.m. A citizen reported the rear window of her vehicle had been smashed.

This case is being investigated.

Domestic Dispute 14-10850 200 Block Park Terrace Court, SE September 24 9:33 p.m. A resident responded to the Vienna Police Station to report that his father had been violent and squeezed him very tightly.

PFC Lyons spoke with both the father and his son and determined that no injuries could be found to confirm an assault had occurred. The father responded to the police station and took his son home.

Domestic Dispute 14-10870 200 Block Park Terrace Court, SE September 25 7:54 p.m. A resident responded to the Vienna Police Department to report that his ex-wife had taken their son and was refusing to return him as was required by the Custody Agreement.

PFC Lyons responded and spoke with the ex-wife who agreed to return to the Vienna Police Station and return her son to her ex-husband.

The husband responded to the police station and took his son home.

Burglary 14-10880 Connell’s Valet 148 Maple Avenue, West September 26 5:14 a.m. An employee reported that someone had entered the business and taken an undisclosed amount of cash from an open cash register (See Assistance Needed Bulletin Below).

This case is being investigated.

Found Property 14-10898 Pennywise Thrift Shop 144 Church Street, NE September 26 12:36 p.m. A citizen responded to the Vienna Police Station to turn in a folding pocket knife that had been found outside the Pennywise Thrift Shop.

Fraud 14-10901 600 Block Niblick Drive, SE September 26 3:01 p.m. A resident reported he had received a telephone call from an individual claiming to be employed with the IRS. The caller stated the resident owed for past taxes and if the amount was not paid he would be arrested.

The resident did not send money to the caller.

Suspicious Event 14-10911 200 Block Mashie Drive, SE September 26 8:38 p.m. A resident reported she went to check on a home owned by her parents that had been damaged by fire, and discovered three people inside the home.

She stated that prior to the fire the individuals were permitted in the residence however since the fire only she and her brother are permitted on the property.

She requested a report be made in the event anything turns up missing.

Destruction of Property 14-10923 Maple Avenue at Center Street, NE September 27 between 12:00 a.m. and 6:14 a.m. Officer Digan responded for the report of damage to the bus stop shelter. Upon arriving he discovered someone had smashed the glass and the wooden frames had been splintered.

Noise Complaint 14-10924 Navy Federal Credit Union 820 Follin Lane, SE September 27 6:18 a.m.

A citizen reported that the contractors had begun working prior to the time specified by the Vienna Noise Ordinance.

Sgt. Juelharte spoke with the contractor and explained the times specified in the ordinance. The contractor stated he would comply with the ordinance.

Petit Larceny 14-11081 300 Block John Marshall Drive, NE September 27 between 2:52 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. A resident reported an unknown person had taken prescription medication that was delivered to her mailbox.

This case is being investigated.

Fraud 14-11005 800 Block Plum Street, SW Between September 27 at 5:40 p.m. and September 29 at 5:05 p.m. A resident reported that someone had attempted to make charges to one of his credit cards without his knowledge.

This case is being investigated.

Vandalism 14-10967 100 Block Saint Andrews Drive, NE Between September 27 11:45 p.m. and September 28 2:00 a.m. A resident reported that someone had smashed out the rear window of his vehicle.

Animal Case 14-10973 100 Block Melody Lane, SW September 28 6:45 p.m. A resident reported that she had adopted a rescue pit bull from the Fairfax County Animal Shelter however the dog did not get along with her cats and she requested MPO Shaw take the dog back to the animal shelter for her.

MPO Shaw informed the resident to keep the animals separated for the evening and she should take the dog back then next morning.

Suspicious Event 14-10972 500 Block Maple Avenue, West September 28 7:02 p.m. Officer Slebonick responded to the report of a possible domestic assault. The caller stated that a man and a woman had been fighting in the parking lot. The couple left the area prior to the arrival of the police.

Officer Slebonick spoke with several witnesses who stated the couple had been arguing however no assault was witnessed.

Arrest – Drunk in Public 14-10981 Nutley Street at Maple Avenue, NW September 29 12:40 a.m. MPO Shaw responded to the area for the report of a female that had refused to pay for her cab fare. Upon his arrival he located the female staggering down the sidewalk. MPO Shaw approached female who stated she got out of the cab because she was afraid of the driver.

After further interaction with the female MPO Shaw determined she was intoxicated and as a result of her intoxication he arrested Ms. Lisa Lane McDevitt, 47, of Bonaventure Drive in Vienna for Drunk in Public.

Ms. McDevitt was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where she was to be held until she was sober. Prior to leaving for the Detention Center she agreed to pay her cab fare.

Medical Case 14-10996 1000 Block Pickett Place, SW September 29 12:13 p.m. MPO Seitz responded to the area for the report of a resident who was in need of medical attention. Upon his arrival a roommate agreed to take the resident to the hospital.

Animal Complaint 14-11002 200 Block Beulah Road, NE September 29 2:43 p.m. Officer Tracy responded for the report of a doe stuck in a resident’s fence. Officer Tracy along with Sgt. Farhan and MPO Shaver were able to free the doe from the fence allowing it to run free unharmed.

Juvenile Case 14-11020 Cedar Lane School 101 Cedar Lane, SW September 30 11:35 a.m. An employee reported that during lunch a student picked up her pizza, threw it at an employee and then became verbally and physically abusive towards other employees who attempted to intervene. Prior to the arrival of the police officers the student locked herself in a restroom.

School employees were able to talk the student into exiting the bathroom and calm her down.

Officer Tracy responded and was able to make arrangements to release her to her mother. The employees did not wish to pursue charges for the assault.

Suspicious Event 14-11025 100 Block Tapawingo Road, SE September 30 3:12 p.m. A citizen reported that he discovered construction workers on a neighboring home had connected to his water supply without his permission.

Sgt. Farhan responded and spoke with the workers informing them if they continued using other people’s utilities without permission they would be charged with Larceny.

Arrest – Driving While Intoxicated 14-11042 600 Block Cottage Street, SW October 01 1:38 a.m. Officer Kiley responded to the area of Dogwood and Center Streets for the report of a hit and run. During his investigation of the crash witnesses informed him the vehicle fled west bound on Dogwood Street and then south bound on Cottage Street, SW.

Officers responding to the area located the vehicle in the 600 block of Cottage Street, SW. Officer Kiley responded to the address listed for the registered owner of the vehicle and after speaking with him he determined that he may have been impaired at the time of the crash. The driver of the vehicle was given the opportunity to perform a series of field sobriety tests which he failed.

Officer Kiley arrested Mr. Douglas Wayne Lee, 41, of Cottage Street, SW in Vienna for Driving While Intoxicated. Mr. Lee was transported to the Vienna Police Station where he was given the opportunity to provide a sample of his breath for analysis. After the analysis he was transported to the Fairfax Count Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Hit and Run.

Suspicious Person 14-11049 PNC Bank 353 Maple Avenue, East October 01 9:42 a.m.

An employee reported that a female claiming to be a customer of the bank was unable to withdraw money from her account and therefore was asking other customers to give her money for gas. The employee stated the female does not have an account with the PNC Bank

Officer Herrera was informed the same female had done this on numerous occasions and locations to include the CVS at 337 Maple Avenue, East.

The woman is described as a well dressed, bleached blonde who drives a black older model four door sedan.

Arrest – Drunk in Public 14-11062 Vienna Police Station 215 Center Street, South October 01 1:01 p.m.

A citizen walked into the Vienna Police Station after returning from an afternoon of drinking in Washington D.C. The citizen stated that a friend was coming to pick him up to give him a ride home, however the friend later called and informed him he could not pick him up.

Officer Herrera responded and after speaking with the individual, who was unable to provide his address, determined he was intoxicated and arrested Mr. Jose Carlos Hernandez-Sorto, 38, No Fixed Address for Drunk in Public.

Mr. Hernandez-Sorto was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was to be held until he was sober.

Arrest - Petit Larceny 14-11066 Wolf Trap Motel 430 Maple Avenue, West October 01 1:59 p.m.

Officer Tremont responded to the area for the report of a female that was acting excited and agitated. While en route the location was updated to Nutley Street and Marshall Road, SW. Upon his arrival he learned the woman had taken a shopping cart from the Safeway in the Pan Am Shopping Center. She stated she needed the cart to remove her possessions from the Wolf Trap Motel as she was no longer permitted to stay there.

Officer Tremont contacted the Safeway Store in the Pan Am Shopping Center and confirmed she had taken the cart from the store he then arrested Ms. Carol Jean Schreitmueller, 55, No Fixed Address for Grand Larceny.

Ms. Schreitmueller was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where she was charged with Removal of a Shopping Cart. While at the Detention Center it was determined that she was in need of medical attention.

Officers Tremont and Slebonick transported her to the hospital for treatment.

Telephone Case 14-11068 300 Block Kingsley Road, SW October 01 2:44 p.m. A resident reported that her family had been receiving numerous telephone calls from the same number usually late at night after the family has gone to bed. She stated that on some occasions the caller does not speak and on some occasions the caller speaks in a foreign language asking for someone the resident does not know.

The resident has requested the caller to stop calling however the caller continues. Officer Herrera attempted to contact the caller however she would not answer the telephone.

Juvenile Case 14-11076 200 Block Park Terrace Court, SE October 02 8:25 a.m. A resident responded to the Vienna Police Station with her juvenile daughter to report that she had been receiving threatening and harassing text messages. The juvenile stated that she and a friend had been receiving the same texts from an individual claiming to be a 36 year old man.

Officer Herrera responded and spoke with the mother and daughter who informed him at no time were the texts sexual in nature, only threatening and scared the daughter.

After completing the report the mother returned her daughter to school where she learned that another friend of the girls had sent the texts. Officer Herrera responded to the school to speak to the girl who informed him the texts were meant only as a prank which she thought would be funny with Halloween coming up.

Officer Herrera counseled the girl on the severity of making those kinds of threats.

Domestic Dispute 14-11089 500 Block Kingsley Road, SW October 02 2:37 p.m. A resident reported that he and his son had been involved in a heated argument.

MPO Smith responded and located the son lying on the ground in the back yard claiming to be in medical distress. Fairfax County Fire and Rescue personnel responded and assessed the son who refused to be transported.

After speaking with the father and son MPO Smith determined that no physical assault had occurred however the father did not want his son staying at his house. The son agreed to leave the residence without further incident.

CRASHES

100 Block Center Street, South 14-10906 September 26 4:15 p.m. A witness reported that the driver of a vehicle was backing out of a parking space, while texting, and struck the vehicle next to her. The texting driver did not stop to exchange information.

Nutley Street at Courthouse Road, SW 14-11029 September 27 4:27 p.m. The drivers of two vehicles were traveling on Nutley Street in the same lane of travel.

The driver of the first vehicle stopped due to the red traffic signal at Courthouse Road, SW and was rear ended by the second vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle was issued a summons for Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

200 Block Maple Avenue, West 14-11000 September 29 2:13 p.m. The owner of a legally parked vehicle returned to his vehicle and discovered it had been struck by an unknown vehicle.

400 Block Nutley Street, SW 14-11006 September 29 5:26 p.m. The drivers of two vehicles were traveling north bound on Nutley Street, SW in the same lane of travel. The drivers stopped due to heavy traffic however the driver of the second vehicle pulled forward and rear ended the first vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle was issued a summons for Failure to Pay Full Time and Attention.

100 Block Park Street, SE 14-11024 September 30 1:16 p.m. The owner of a legally parked vehicle returned to her vehicle and discovered it had been struck by an unknown vehicle.

Maple Avenue near Berry Street, NE 14-11027 September 30 3:55 p.m. The driver of the first vehicle was traveling west bound on Maple Avenue approaching Berry Street, NE in the right most lane.

The driver of the second vehicle made a left turn from Berry Street onto Maple Avenue, NE.

The driver of the second vehicle switched lanes from the center turn lane to the left most lane at the same time the driver of the first vehicle switched lanes from the right most lane into the left most lane and a collision occurred.

Dogwood Street at Center Street, SW 14-11041 October 01 1:38 a.m. The driver of a vehicle was traveling south bound on Center Street and while attempting to make a right turn onto Dogwood Street the driver lost control of the vehicle, leaving the roadway, striking the curb, a street sign, went into a yard and struck landscape stones.

The driver fled the scene prior to the arrival of the police officers. Officer Kiley was able to locate and identify the driver of the vehicle who was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated.
