Vienna Featured In Documentary 'American Vienna'

The documentary, created by Vienna, Austria residents, will be screened at the Vienna Community Center.

The Austrian capital of Vienna is without a doubt the most famous "Vienna" in the world, but there are plenty of communities bearing the same name with unique characteristics. All of the Vienna communities in the U.S. will be featured in a new Austrian documentary called "American Vienna."

Nine Vienna communities—including your home of Vienna, Virginia –are featured in the film created by documentarians Jasmin Al-Kattib and Richard Kromp. The filmmakers visited Viennas around the country in 2014, starting in Maine and working their way to New York, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Illinois, Missouri, Alabama, and Georgia. Their 94-minute project explores these small, often drastically different, towns.

The Vienna, Virginia portion of the film includes scenes from the Fourth of July celebration and an interview with local historian Mike Berger inside the Freeman Store. Berger shares a brief history of the Town and some of its character.

Local residents can check out the film during a screening at the Vienna Community Center Tuesday, May 8 at 7:30 p.m. during the Mayor @ Your Service forum. The event is free and open to the public.

"I’m really excited to share this documentary with our community," said Mayor Laurie DiRocco. "It will be fun to see a visual dialogue between a bunch of Viennas, especially since they are located in different areas of the country. I hope that everyone comes out to the show and engages in the Q & A–it’s always fun to go to the movies and chat about what you just saw afterward."
