Early Voting Nears For 4 Primary Elections In Vienna

VIENNA, VA — Early voting is set to begin Friday for the June 20, 2023 primary election in Virginia. In Vienna, there are four primary elections: Board of Supervisors chairman, Commonwealth's Attorney for Fairfax County, Fairfax County Sheriff and 37th Virginia Senate District.

The first date to know for the primary election is Friday, May 5, when early voting will begin. In-person voting and mail-in voting will be provided, along with drop boxes for mail-in ballots.

Candidates

All Fairfax County Board of Supervisors seats are up for election in the general election on Nov. 7, 2023, but not all seats have primaries. There will be Democratic primaries for the chairman, as well as supervisors in the Mount Vernon, Dranesville, Mason and Springfield districts.

Current Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay faces a primary challenge from Lisa Downing.

Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn, who represents the Town of Vienna, does not have a Democratic primary challenge.

There are two other primaries across Fairfax County — Commonwealth's Attorney and sheriff. Incumbent Commonwealth's Attorney Steve Descano faces a challenge from Ed Nuttall. Incumbent Sheriff Stacey Kincaid faces challenger Kelvin Garcia in the primary.

Only some Virginia House of Delegates and Senate districts will have primary elections. Because of mandated redistricting that happened after the 2020 Census, Virginia's legislative district maps have been redrawn.

The Town of Vienna is within the new 37th Senate District along with the City of Falls Church, Dunn Loring, Merrifield, Idylwood, Pimmit Hills and parts of Tysons, Oakton and Fairfax City. State Sen. Chap Petersen is running against Saddam Salim in the Democratic primary.

In the House of Delegates, the Town of Vienna will fall in the new 12th House District. Del. Holly Seibold does not have a Democratic challenger, so no primary election is scheduled.

The Nov. 7, 2023 general election will feature more races, including all Fairfax County School Board seats, all Fairfax County Board of Supervisors seats, all Virginia House and Senate seats, Fairfax County clerk of Circuit Court, Commonwealth's Attorney and sheriff.

How to Vote Early

In-person early voting will be held at several locations around Fairfax County. An acceptable form of identification is required for in-person voting.

Starting on May 5, the Fairfax County Government Center, Mount Vernon Governmental Center and North County Governmental Center will be open for early voting. On June 10, 13 additional early voting locations will open — Burke Centre Library, Centreville Regional Library, Franconia Governmental Center, Great Falls Library, Herndon-Fortnightly Library, Lorton Community Center, Mason Governmental Center, McLean Governmental Center, Providence Community Center, Sully Governmental Center, Thomas Jefferson Library, Tysons-Pimmit Regional Library and West Springfield Governmental Center.

The deadline for early in-person voting is 5 p.m. on June 17.

Another option is requesting a mail-in ballot. The easiest way to request a ballot is through the Virginia Department of Elections' citizen portal. Voters may also download an application or pick one up

For those not applying online through the Virginia Department of Elections, paper applications can be returned by email to AbsenteeBallot@fairfaxcounty.gov, mail to Fairfax County Office of Elections P.O. Box 10161, Fairfax, VA 22038, fax to 703-324-3725 or dropped off at the Fairfax County Office of Elections, 12000 Government Center Pkwy, Suite 323, Fairfax, VA 22035.

Completed ballots can be returned by mail or dropped off at the permanent Ballot Drop Box outside the Fairfax County Government Center at 12000 Government Center Parkway. Drop boxes will also be provided at early voting locations during voting hours and at all polling places on Election Day from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The deadline to apply for a mail-in ballot is 5 p.m. on June 9. Completed ballots must be returned by 7 p.m. on Election Day, June 20 or postmarked by June 20 and received by noon on the third day after the election.

Voter Registration

The deadline for voter registration or updating your voter registration address is May 30. Voters may register after May 30 and will be allowed to cast a provisional ballot on Election Day.

Voters may apply or check their voter registration status, polling place and election districts through the Virginia Department of Elections' citizen portal.

In Fairfax County, voters may also register at the Fairfax County Office of Elections, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Suite 323, Fairfax, VA as well as at early voting locations during voting hours. Mail applications are also available.

Voting on Election Day

On Election Day (Tuesday, June 20), voters can head to their assigned polling place to cast a ballot from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. An acceptable form of identification is required. A provisional ballot is an alternative for voters who cannot provide ID.
