Vienna Restaurant Inspections: Repeat Fruit Fly Violation

Do you know how clean your local restaurants are? Town of Vienna and other Fairfax County restaurants regularly undergo health inspections, with the frequency depending on the type of food served and how it is prepared. While violations like malfunctioning refrigerators and food that's not warm or cold enough often pop up, health inspectors sometimes note more critical violations.

“In our experience, it is unrealistic to expect that a complex, full-service food operation can routinely avoid any violations," notes the Virginia Department of Health.

Here are full results for the latest inspections around Vienna, including restaurants that passed with no violations. Of note, Burger 7 had nine violations, including fruit flies, during a follow-up inspection. This was a repeat violation. Another follow-up inspection was scheduled for Sept. 27, but results are not posted at this time.

violations: The following food items that are not easily identified by appearance were observed without a label: Sugar, dispensing and/or in-use utensils improperly stored between use as follows: A large ice scoop was found buried the ice at the ice machine, food item(s) were observed cold holding at improper temperatures using a calibrated food temperature measuring device: Mashed potato = 46F, 44F, no Quaternary Ammonium Compound (QAC) test kit located in the facility for monitoring the concentration of the chemical sanitizing solution, interior surfaces of the ice machine is in need of cleaning, nonfood-contact surfaces of the following equipment had accumulations of grime and debris: shelves inside the walk-in refrigerator were noted to be soiled and in need of cleaning

violations: The nonfood-contact surfaces of the following equipment had accumulations of grime and debris: Excessive ice build-up noted in the ice cream chest freezer on the serving line, no Certified Food Manager present at the beginning of the inspection, establishment has been ordered to close due to the lack of a Certified Food Manager (corrected), plumbing connections under the 3-compartment sink piping are leaking, live fruit flies were noted on premises around floor drains

Sunflower Vegetarian Restaurant: 2531 Chain Bridge Rd, Vienna, VA 22181, last inspection: Sept. 24

violations: Open drinking containers stored in a manner that may contaminate food, food contact surfaces or utensils, wet wiping cloths used for wiping counters and other equipment surfaces were observed stored on the counting boardcounter, food item(s) were observed cold holding at improper temperatures using a calibrated food temperature measuring device: a variety of sauces, food that is prepared on site is not used or discarded within 24 hours of preparation and was not observed to be date marked: Sauces (all corrected), certified food manager could not provide a food temperature measuring base of the walls in the back room is not maintained in good repair, floor in the hot water heater area and next to the grease trap is in need of cleaning
