The play explores the dark family secrets that threaten to destroy external and internal perceptions about the life the members lead. Brooke Wyeth returns home to Palm Springs after six-year absence to celebrate Christmas with her parents, her brother and her aunt.
Brooke announces that she is about to publish a memoir dredging up a pivotal and tragic event in the family’s history-a wound they don’t want reopened. In effect, she draws a line in the sand and dares them all to cross it.
The ensuing revelations concerning the mysterious history of what happened years ago leaves the whole family, including Brooke, reeling. The combination comedy/drama/mystery will keep you on the edge of your seats, as the truth is grippingly unraveled.
Playwright Jon Robin Baitz has laced the story with humor and wit, political commentary (setting it in 2004 after Iraq is underway), sharp dialogue and an affecting premise.
The play had a seven-month stint at Lincoln Center (following a transfer from off-Broadway), garnered Five Tony Award nominations including Best Play, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play.
