  • Reading Express is a books-on-tape program coupled with effective, individualized tutoring sessions to develop reading and language skills in identified first grade students at Providence Elementary, a Title I school in Fairfax.
  • Each year, more than 30 students who struggle learning the basic skills of reading often due to focus issues, language barriers at home or parents’ work schedules benefit from the program.
  • The nonprofit equips students with a cassette tape recorder, level-appropriate books and audio tapes to advance their at-home reading experience.
  • Member volunteers work one-on-one with at-risk students on Tuesdays during the school year. Students receive 30 minutes of focused instruction tailored to their unique needs. Progress is recorded and monitored throughout the year to ensure program objectives and reading milestones are achieved.
  • During a typical reading session, students demonstrate their abilities by reading aloud. Member volunteers pose questions to assess knowledge and promote comprehension. Educational games and fun activities designed to improve students’ reading skills, increase vocabulary and boost confidence are introduced as well.
