VYS Phoenix Defeat PA Strikers at Region I Championships

Vienna Phoenix '99 Defeat Defending Region I Champions Pennsylvania Strikers 2-1

The U16 Girls VYS Phoenix '99 came from behind to defeat the Pennsylvania Strikers, 2-1.  Although dominating possession through much of the first half, Phoenix could not capitalize on several scoring opportunities.  The Strikers broke the scoreless game late in the half off a well-place corner kick leading to their only goal of the game.

Phoenix came back 16 minutes into the second half when Abby Fusca sloted a pass to Rachel Jackson, who beat two defenders before driving the ball into the back of the net, leveling the score at 1-1.  Several minutes later, Fusca won a battle for the ball in midfield, passing it to Jackson.  Whitney Wiley then scooped up a loose ball, surprised the keeper with a quick shot for the go ahead goal.

Phoenix continued to control possession and defended well when in their end.  The defense cleared several crucial Strikers attacks, and Phoenix kept the pressure on with several runs of their own.  Jackson thought she had one more score, the ending whistle already finalized the outcome of the match, 2-1.
