Here’s more about Saturday night’s screening:
- The Washington West Film Festival, dedicated to the philosophy that story can change the world, is presenting a 50th anniversary screening of The Sound of Music.
- Set in 1930s Austria, the musical tells the story of a novice nun, Maria, who becomes the governess to widowed Captain Von Trapp’s seven children. Through song, Maria’s relationship with the children, as well as the Captain, grows, while the Nazis’ reach over Austria expands.
- The film was nominated for 10 Oscars and won five, including Best Picture in 1966. While a critical success, The Sound of Music was also a massive commercial hit. Adjusted for inflation, it is the third-highest grossing movie of all time.
- The Sound of Music was the final musical written by theatre icons Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. It features many recognizable songs including “The Sound of Music,” “Do-Re-Mi,” and “Edelweiss.” The pair also wrote Oklahoma!, South Pacific and The King and I, among other timeless Broadway favorites.
- To honor the film’s 50th year anniversary as an all-time classic, Washington West invites you to celebrate its commitment to story and The Sound of Music.
- “We have a core belief that story can change the world and we’ve built a film festival around it. We hold in highest regard and look forward to spotlighting films that provoke us to dream and question what we know to be true. Films that inspire us to see the potential of what could be and that ultimately paint a unique picture of the raw human condition.”
