2019 Primary Election: Absentee Voting, Deadlines For Alexandria

The primary election will determine candidates for the Clerk of Court and 35th Senate District.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Absentee voting is about to begin for the June 11 primary election in Alexandria. The primary election will determine candidates for the November general election for the 35th Virginia Senate District and clerk of court for the City of Alexandria. All Virginia House of Delegates and Senate seats are up for grabs in November.

Absentee voting will open on April 26 through June 8 at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections (132 N. Royal St., Suite 100). Absentee voting is an alternative to voting on Election Day for those unable to make it to the polls. A Virginia resident can cast an absentee ballot if he or she is:

  • A student attending college or university outside of locality of residence in Virginia
  • A spouse of student attending college or university outside locality of residence in Virginia
  • Have personal business, work or vacation outside the county of residence on Election Day
  • Working and commuting for 11 or more hours, between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m., on Election Day
  • A "first responder" (firefighter, law enforcement, emergency medical technician, search and rescue)
  • Have a disability or illness
  • A caregiver for a family member confined at home.
  • Pregnant
  • Confined (awaiting trial or convicted of a misdemeanor)
  • An electoral board member, registrar, officer of election, or custodian of voting equipment
  • Attending a religious obligation
  • Active Duty Merchant Marine or Armed Forces
  • Spouse or dependent living with a member of Active Duty Merchant Marine or Armed Forces
  • Temporarily residing outside of US
  • Temporarily residing outside of US for employment or spouse or dependent residing with employee
  • An authorized representative of candidate or party serving inside the polling place
  • Granted a protective order issued by or under the authority of a court of competent jurisdiction

In- person absentee voting hours at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday to Friday and Saturdays, June 1 and June 8. Extended hours from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. will be held Wednesday, May 29 and Monday, June 3. The office is closed on Memorial Day, May 27.

An acceptable form of photo identification is required for in-person voting in Virginia. Residents can obtain a free voter ID at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections.

Voters can also request an absentee ballot by mail by June 4 at 5 p.m. To submit an application online, visit vote.elections.virginia.gov. Applications can also be downloaded here or requested by calling the Alexandria Voter Registration Office at 703-746-4050. You can mail the completed application to 132 North Royal St., Suite 100, Alexandria, VA. 22314, fax to 703-838-6449 or scanned and emailed as an attachment to VoteAbsentee@alexandriava.gov.

Voters can return completed ballots by mail or in person at the Alexandria Voter Registration Office (132 North Royal St., Suite 100, Alexandria, VA. 22314). The deadline to return the completed absentee ballot is 7 p.m. on Election Day, June 11.

What's on the ballot

The 35th Senate District and Alexandria Clerk of Court races are the only two prices in the city. The 35th Senate District voting is open to voters in the Hermitage, John Adams, William Ramsay and Southport precincts. All registered City of Alexandria voters can vote for Clerk of Court.

The races are for the Democratic primary. There is no Republican primary in Alexandria. Voters are not registered by party and can vote in any primary.

Important dates to know

  • April 26: In-person absentee voting opens
  • May 20: Voter registration deadline for primary election (5 p.m. in-person or by mail and 11:59 p.m. online)
  • June 4: Deadline to apply for an absentee ballot, 5 p.m. by mail, fax and online
  • June 8: Deadline for in-person absentee voting, 5 p.m.
  • June 11: Election Day; polls open from 6 a.m.-7 p.m.; deadline for returning an absentee ballot by 7 p.m.
