Alexandria Man Dies in Motorcycle Crash on I-495

Michael A. Greenman, 36, struck a 2 to 3-inch lip at the start of new pavement and lost control of his bike, Virginia State Police say.

An Alexandria area man, Michael A. Greenman, died Wednesday night in a motorcycle crash on I-495, Virginia State Police reported Thursday morning in a news release.

At 11:29 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 13), Virginia State Police Trooper E.N. Kwaw responded to a fatal crash in Fairfax County. At the time of the crash, Kwaw was stopped inside the work zone for the safety of the oncoming traffic and highway workers.

A stationary highway work zone was established in the eastbound lanes of I-495, just prior to Exit 173/Van Dorn Street. Three right lanes were closed to through traffic for the work zone; the three left lanes were open to through traffic. The lanes leading up to the work zone were milled and then there was a 2 -3 inch lip at the start of new pavement.

A 2008 Suzuki motorcycle was eastbound on I-495, when it struck the lip of new pavement. The motorcyclist, Greenman , 36, lost control of the bike and was ejected. Both the motorcycle and Greenman were thrown into an eastbound travel lane and then struck by a 2012 Kia Sorento.

Greenman died at the scene.

The driver of the Kia, a 38-year-old Maryland man, was not injured in the crash.

Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation. No charges were filed.

All eastbound lanes of I-495 were re-opened by approximately 2 a.m.
