Together We Bake Receives $10K Contribution from AT&T
The Alexandria nonprofit serves women in need of a second chance through workforce and personal development.
Together We Bake: Together We Bake, a nonprofit workforce and personal development program for women in need, received a $10,000 contribution from AT&T.
The Together We Bake program serves women who are homeless; returning from the criminal justice system; survivors of domestic abuse; recent immigrants; or facing long-term unemployment. It is centered around a small baking business through which the women actively learn and participate in food production, food safety education, and business administration. Together We Bake also teaches empowerment and life-skills classes to help women develop self-confidence, healthy coping strategies, and a strong support network as they move toward self-sufficiency. Each woman graduates job-ready, empowered, and with a nationally- recognized ServSafe certificate, resulting in preferential hiring and higher wages. In addition to the financial support, more than 20 volunteers from AT&T on August 9 spent several hours giving back to Together We Bake. AT&T employees helped package granola and label the packages. They also heard the personal stories of Lisbeth Delcid and Colida Johnson, TWB Program Managers who are graduates of the program. “Our relationship with AT&T will help provide more resources to women in need in our community,” said Together We Bake Co-Founder Tricia Sabatini. “We are working to increase post-program support through some new mental health initiatives and services. Thanks to the generous contribution from AT&T, we will be able to accomplish these goals and serve more women in our community.” The volunteer event was part of Believe DC, an employee-driven initiative through which AT&T employees come together to help address critical community issues including homelessness and hunger, and to help underserved youth secure necessary skills for a successful future. Believe DC℠ - is an extension of the AT&T Believes℠ initiative, according to Vince Apruzzese, president, AT&T Virginia.
“Together We Bake gives women the skills and experiences they will need to excel in new jobs
– and in life. They have a strong record of success, and we’re excited to help them reach more people in the community,” said Apruzzese. To date, Together We Bake has graduated 170 women from the program, with a 97% passage rate for the ServSafe exam and an 8% recidivism rate for women involved in the criminal justice system (compared to the national rate of 70%).
