19-Year-Old Dies After Shootout In Undercover Drug Investigation In Prince William County

A second man is hospitalized after the shootout with law enforcement Thursday in Dale City; the shooting probe continues, authorities said.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA — A 19-year-old man has died after a shooting in Dale City during an undercover investigation into fentanyl distribution, authorities said Monday.

Jaiden Malik Carter, 19, of Woodbridge, died Sunday at a local hospital after being shot in the upper body during an exchange of gunfire with undercover officers on Thursday, authorities said.

A 30-year-old man who was shot remains hospitalized but is expected to survive, authorities said. His identity has not been released; he and Clark were subjects of the investigation, authorities said.

The shooting happened about 7 p.m. Thursday in the 14700 block of Fox Glove Court near Cloverdale Road. The undercover operation included officers from Prince William County, Manassas City, Manassas Park, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; four of those officers — two detectives with Prince William County and two detectives with Manassas City — fired their weapons, authorities said.

No members of the task force were struck or injured during the exchange; the four detectives have been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

Authorities have not yet said who fired first.

The criminal investigation from the undercover operation has been turned over to independent investigators from Critical Incident Response Team. The results of the investigation will be presented to Amy Ashworth of the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.
