4 Dumfries Shooting Victims Stable After Surgeries, Family Says

The four surviving victims from a Dumfries shooting are now in stable condition after undergoing surgery, a family friend said on Friday.

DUMFRIES, VA — The four surviving children who were shot in Dumfries earlier this week are in stable condition Friday, according to a family friend who has provided updates online. The children all underwent surgery.

Before they were shot, the children were still mourning the loss of their mother, Portia Carroll. Carroll died in September, leaving her eight children behind.

One child, a 3-year-old girl, died in the shooting at their home on Milroy Drive in Dumfries on Wednesday. The four other children, three siblings and their teenage uncle, suffered life-threatening injuries.

Alix Grimm, a friend of the family, has provided updates online through a GoFundMe. The fundraiser went live on Thursday and has raised more than $12,000 to support the victims and their family.

"On September 12, 2022 , the Carroll-Gatling family was forever changed. Portia Carroll passed and left her 8 children behind. Their lives were uprooted and changed drastically overnight," Grimm wrote in the GoFundMe. "Little did we know that only three months later another tragedy would occur and this time directly involve her beautiful children."

Now, Grimm is raising money to support the children's medical needs and provide food for the family as they grieve and support their injured loved ones. Some of the raised money will go towards a memorial service for the deceased 3-year-old.

Christy Genova is a counselor at C.D. Hylton High School. "The Gatling's are a part of our Hylton family and we care deeply about them all," Genova wrote on the GoFundMe page. "This is such a horrible tragedy and we have you all in our thoughts and prayers. Please know we are here for whatever you need."
