New York State Police officials said Davis forced David into an SUV around 7:30 a.m. on April 5. Authorities issued an endangered adult alert and began searching for her.
At 9:40 p.m. a state trooper started chasing an SUV on I-95 in Fairfax County after learning that the vehicle had the wrong license plates.
The trooper pulled over the SUV and spoke to Davis and David. When the trooper returned to his car, he learned that Davis was wanted for abduction, according to the police report.
Davis then drove away from the traffic stop, authorities said.
Near exit 148, the SUV driver ran off the side of the road and crashed in the woods, according to a police report.
"As troopers approached the SUV, the driver began shooting at them," a Virginia State Police spokesperson said last week. "State police returned fire."
