Police: Homeless Man Shot Another Man Friday Night

Suspect is in jail; victim flown to hospital with "life-threatening" injuries.

A homeless man has been jailed after allegedly shooting another man in the face during an argument Friday night at a homeless camp near Interstate 95, according to the Prince William County police.

Daniel Martin Clay, 43, of no fixed address, has been charged with aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to a police report. He’s being held without bond at the Prince William-Manassas regional jail, and his next date in court is Jan. 19.

The shooting victim, a 28-year-old Woodbridge man, was flown Friday night to a local hospital “with serious, life-threatening injuries,” the Prince William police said.

Police responded at 10:46 p.m. Friday to the report of a shooting at a homeless camp behind a shopping center in the 14400 block of Potomac Mills Road, near Opitz Boulevard and I-95 in Woodbridge. They found that the shooting victim and Clay, an acquaintance, had gotten into an argument that escalated. Clay then shot the victim in the face, the police report said.

Clay fled the scene before police arrived. A police K9 team (an officer with a trained dog), searched the area for the suspect, but could not find him, according to the police report. The police located and arrested Clay without incident later that evening.
