Police ID Woodbridge Man Who Was Shot in Domestic Dispute

He's facing charges for wielding knife at officer, say Prince William County police.

A 25-year-old Woodbridge man is facing charges after being shot Monday evening by a police officer during a domestic disturbance.

Yonatan Nega Marufe, 25, of 13173 Tory Loop, allegedly approached the officer with a knife during a dispute between him and his mother, according to the Prince William County police. Shot in the upper body, he was flown to an area hospital, where he was treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries.

On Tuesday, the police charged Marufe with attempted aggravated malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer and attempted aggravated malicious wounding, according to a police report. He’s being held without bond at the Prince William-Manassas regional jail, and his next date in court is Oct. 14.

The officer involved in the shooting “has been placed on routine administrative leave as the investigation continues,” the Prince William Police Department said.

Police officers first responded to Marufe’s residence at 6:36 p.m. Monday. Once on the scene, one officer made contact with the mother, a 47-year-old Woodbridge woman. While the officer spoke to her, the son, identified as Marufe, approached the officer and his mother armed with a knife. The officer then fired his gun and struck the son in the upper body, the police report said.

The officer and mother sustained minor, non-gunshot-related injuries and were also taken to an area hospital, the police said.
