Federal Way father suspected of manslaughter in 4-month-old baby's suffocation death (king5.com) — Federal Way police and King County investigators are examining whether a local father's actions meet the standard for second-degree manslaughter after his 4-month-old baby suffocated while swaddled and left face down on a nursing pillow. The February incident at a Federal Way apartment complex also involved an alleged violation of a domestic violence no-contact order protecting the child's mother. 
2. Washington weekly drug overdose tracker Aug. 24-28 (everettpost.com) — Two recent drug-related deaths tracked by King County involved Federal Way locations, one outdoors and one at a residence, both ruled accidental overdoses involving fentanyl and other substances. The weekly report, based on the Medical Examiner's data, highlights how the ongoing overdose crisis is touching communities across the county, including right here in Federal Way.
3. 86 of 114 King County juvenile cases diverted in July — prosecutors say context matters (mynorthwest.com) — Federal Way saw just one gun-related criminal case filed by King County prosecutors in July, according to new data on juvenile and firearm cases. Most juvenile matters countywide were low-level misdemeanors that state law requires be diverted from court, while all juvenile gun cases were fully prosecuted. Officials say the numbers reflect broader declines in violent crime but caution against simple explanations.
4. New recycling and transfer station expands services for South King County (auburnexaminer.com) — Federal Way residents now have expanded recycling and hazardous waste options thanks to King County's new South County Recycling and Transfer Station in nearby Algona, designed to serve Algona, Auburn and Federal Way. The modern, energy-efficient facility offers broader recycling services, permanent hazardous waste drop-off, and features to reduce odors, noise, and traffic while supporting the county's climate goals.
