8 Halloween Safety Tips From Local Police

Whether you're a driver, a trick-or-treater, or a parent, check out these Halloween safety tips before you go out tonight.

GIG HARBOR, WA - By now we know there are no razor blades in the apples (there also probably aren't any apples), but that doesn't mean you should let down your guard on Halloween. It's a fun night, but one where little kids wearing masks are out running around on the streets, possibly hopped up on sugar. So everyone has a role in keeping the holiday safe.

Here are eight Halloween safety tips from local police to remember tonight:

  1. Drivers, bicyclists, and motorcyclists should simply slow down. Kids get excited on Halloween (to say nothing of the sugar) and might run, stumble, or dart out into the street.
  2. Make sure your pets are secure tonight. Dogs or cats might escape when you open the door to give out treats.
  3. All trick-or-treaters should carry a flashlight or glow stick so they are more easily seen.
  4. On Halloween as on all other days: advise kids not to talk to strangers.
  5. Take off masks before crossing the street, and always double-check surroundings for cars and other hazards.
  6. Even if you're not giving out candy, homeowners should keep lights on. That will help trick-or-treaters find their way along darker, spookier streets.
  7. Have alleys in your neighborhood? For drivers, always approach the sidewalk slowly. For pedestrians, always remember to look before crossing alley entrances.
  8. And finally: tell trick-or-treaters not to eat candy until they get home. Even if there aren't razors in the apples, it's good to check that candy hasn't been tampered with.
