• 'Nothing like the King County Regional Homelessness Authority': Pierce County executive pitches 'unified' homelessness strategy (mynorthwest.com) — Parkland is set to get a new behavioral health crisis stabilization unit by year's end, giving families and first responders an alternative to jails or ERs during mental health emergencies. Pierce County Executive Ryan Mello also outlined a proposed unified homelessness strategy, falling crime trends, and a November vote on whether the sheriff should be elected or appointed.
   

• Teen was killed after handing over $10 necklace: Prosecutors (lawandcrime.com) — Parkland residents are learning more about the deadly May robbery in which 17-year-old Braylon Diaz was shot after handing over a $10 necklace while walking with his girlfriend. Prosecutors say suspect Brandon Torres-Meza, extradited from Mexico, has pleaded not guilty, and a court commissioner has set his bail at $10 million while the case proceeds.
   

• WA state House candidate accused of refusing breathalyzer, charged with DUI (thedailyworld.com) — A Tacoma state House race that includes Parkland is in the spotlight after challenger Krista Perez was charged with DUI following a five-car crash near Lincoln High School. Perez, who leads incumbent Rep. Melanie Morgan of Parkland in the primary, is accused of refusing a proper breathalyzer sample and could face stiffer penalties if convicted.
