
Sometime early in adolescence I took possession of my mother’s Led Zeppelin ecords. Alone in the house, I would stand between the stereo speakers as “Whole Lotta Love” whirled back and forth in hi-fidelity sound from left to right. I loved the vibration in my body; it created as much emotional well-being as a physical elation.
A decade later, hiking on the slick rock of Canyon Lands, SE Utah, I found myself in profound silence. I could hear the vibration of the heated air rising up from the sun warmed rocks. I underwent simultaneous exhilaration and quieting.
The first time I heard my yoga class join together to create the sound “OM” (AUM), I knew what I was hearing: the sound of the universe.

At these moments I am transported beyond “me” to something greater. I climb into the vibration and ride the waves. I intuit I am safe, I belong, and I am no different from any other. I do not want to leave, and always want to return.
