📰 News we're reading

1. Skanska signs $110m Renton High School contract in Washington (worldconstructionnetwork.com) — A $110 million project is transforming Renton High School into a much larger, modern campus while keeping the historic 1930s facade and IKEA Performing Arts Center. Construction is already underway in phases to keep school open, with completion expected in fall 2029 and space for 1,600 students plus new athletic fields and community facilities.

2. Renton, WA: School Counselor Caught on Camera Assaulting 7-Year-Old — District Won't Let Victim Transfer, Family Says (newsbreak.com) — A Renton elementary student's family is demanding the Renton School District let their 7‑year‑old transfer after surveillance video reportedly showed a school counselor pushing, kicking, and slamming him into a hallway wall. The district has not detailed any discipline or transfer decision publicly, leaving the family and many Renton parents pressing for answers, transparency, and stronger protections for students.

3. City Council approves property purchase for resource center (rentonreporter.com) — Renton City Council has approved buying a 3.1‑acre East Valley Highway property, using eminent domain, as a potential site for a new city stabilization campus serving people experiencing homelessness. The city is weighing this site against the nearby former Compton Lumber property, while modeling its approach on Auburn's "compassionate accountability" program and using dedicated tax funding and temporary housing contracts through 2027.

4. Gov. Ferguson proposes Phone-Free Schools Act (rentonreporter.com) — Renton families could see even stricter limits on student cell phone use if Gov. Bob Ferguson's proposed Phone-Free Schools Act passes this session. The bill would require districts statewide, including Renton's, to enforce bell‑to‑bell bans with limited exceptions, building on Renton School District's current rules that already bar elementary students from using phones during the school day.

5. Renton's defense stands tall and wins 'Battle of the Birds' thriller over Lindbergh (rentonreporter.com) — Renton High's Redhawks football team edged Lindbergh 21–15 in the annual "Battle of the Birds," stopping the Eagles at the one-yard line as time expired. After giving up big scores in recent weeks, Renton's defense held strong, and the team now looks ahead to hosting Evergreen at home on October 9.
