Issaquah, WA Native Reflects on Sustainable Agriculture Engineering Service Trip

Northeastern University student Cassandra Johnson describes her experience on an engineering service trip to Belize

Cassandra Johnson, a fourth-year chemical engineering student at Northeastern University, recently took part in a service trip to southern Belize with 11 of her classmates through a partnership with non-profit organization Sustainable Harvest International (SHI). While in Belize, the students helped local farmers learn techniques to improve the agricultural sustainability of farms within their community.

“As engineers, sometimes we can get caught up in all the math and science and forget the people that we’re creating the products and technologies for,” said Johnson in a blog post she wrote about the trip. “This trip showed me that as an engineer, I can apply my problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to pursue humanitarian work in communities similar to the ones in Belize to create new technologies and advancements.”

An Issaquah, WA native, Johnson plans on graduating in the spring of 2018.
