📰 News we're reading

1. Spokane proposes major changes to Division Street to improve walkability and transit (929zzu.com) — Spokane leaders are weighing a sweeping overhaul of Division Street that could narrow car lanes, add bike lanes and wider sidewalks, and change zoning from the river to Mead. With the Planning Commission's approval, the plan now heads to City Council, where public comment in the coming weeks will help shape how walkable and transit-friendly this key corridor becomes over the next several decades.

2. Spokane-area higher ed sees slow, steady admissions (spokanejournal.com) — If you're planning college in Spokane, local campuses are mostly holding steady after pandemic enrollment drops. Spokane Community College, Spokane Falls, Gonzaga, EWU, WSU-Spokane and Whitworth all report flat to slowly rising admissions, with some programs rebounding faster than others. Leaders say the higher-ed environment here remains generally healthy, though international and transfer enrollments continue to shape the numbers.

3. Ecology calls on Spokane International Airport, Spokane County, city of Spokane to prioritize PFAS cleanup in West Plains (spokesman.com) — State regulators say Spokane International Airport, the city, and Spokane County are moving too slowly on cleaning up PFAS contamination that's tainted at least 17 West Plains wells, forcing many residents to rely on bottled water. Ecology has set a new deadline for a cleanup plan and warns it may step in and bill local agencies if progress continues to lag.

4. Spokane County Assessor says economic impact of fires is estimated at $1 billion (krem.com) — Spokane County's assessor estimates the Spokane Complex Fires have caused about $1 billion in economic damage, not including firefighting costs, affecting homes, vehicles and lost wages. His office is already adjusting property values using aerial and street-level imaging so fire victims can receive tax refunds or revised bills. Residents with damage concerns are urged to contact the assessor's office by phone or through SpokaneCounty.gov.

5. Washington State coordinates major donation effort for Spokane Complex Fires recovery (krem.com) — State and local agencies are coordinating large-scale donations to help Spokane-area residents recover from the Spokane Complex Fires, with clear guidance on what items are urgently needed. Spokane and Stevens County survivors are being directed to the Spokane Region Long Term Recovery Group, while other affected counties have their own recovery contacts. Businesses and nonprofits are encouraged to offer specific goods or services through the state commerce department.
