Driver Passing On Shoulder Caused Bad I-5 Accident: State Patrol
The two cars were racing along I-5 through Tacoma and eventually crashed with a third vehicle.

TACOMA, WA - Washington State Patrol is saying that a bad car crash in Tacoma Thursday afternoon was caused by a driver who tried to pass another driver on the shoulder. The crash snarled traffic along northbound I-5 for several hours.
The crash happened around 2 p.m. Thursday in the northbound lanes near the South 56th Street exit in Tacoma.
According to state patrol, Jeffrey Griggith, 68, of Federal Way was driving northbound behind Annastatia Gipson, 75, of Tacoma, when he tried to pass her along the shoulder. When Griggith tried to reenter the travel lane, state patrol said, the two cars collided. Both vehicle rolled over along the right shoulder.

A third vehicle was involved in the crash but left the scene.

State patrol is still investigating the incident, but is reporting that reckless driving, speeding, and driving along the shoulder were all factors in the crash.
