The crash happened Saturday afternoon near Portland Avenue along I-5.

TACOMA, WA - Nine people - including a Washington State Patrol officer - were involved in a car accident along I-5 in Tacoma on Saturday afternoon. The crash happened just before 1 p.m. in the southbound lanes near Portland Avenue. State police believe the crash was caused by a driver following too close.
According to police, one vehicle and the state patrol officer - Ryan Burke, 37 - slowed down to stop for traffic. A third vehicle hit Burke's car, causing him to crash into the car in front of him. A fourth car couldn't stop in time, and collided with the three other involved vehicles.

The car that allegedly hit the officer's vehicle was driven by a 32-year-old woman from Rancho Pales Verdes, Calif. That car had three passengers inside, including two children, ages 3 and 4. Burke was the only one injured in the crash, but was able to transport himself to the hospital for treatment.
