He received a 360-day time-served sentence and was returned to federal custody, while Charleston police emphasize the intensive work that helped prevent any deaths during the incident.

2. 'We see the need every day': Volunteers build 40 beds for Kanawha County children (wvpress.org) — Families in the Charleston area who lack beds for their children can now apply for help from a new Kanawha County chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, which just built 40 beds during a community event at Lowe's Trace Fork. Volunteers from across the county spent Saturday cutting, sanding, and assembling bed frames, and organizers plan more builds this fall if they can secure indoor space.

Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Rick Atkinson to speak in Charleston Oct. 15 (wvnews.com) — Charleston residents can hear Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Rick Atkinson speak for free at the Capitol Theater on Oct. 15, with doors opening at 7 p.m. The evening includes a Q&A, book signing, and nearby ArtWalk and American Revolution exhibit, all part of local events marking America's 250th anniversary downtown.

Two West Virginia Girl Scouts build picnic tables for Charleston's Herbert and Gloria Jones Woodlands Trail (wowktv.com) — Charleston hikers now have two new picnic tables along the Herbert and Gloria Jones Woodlands Trail, built by Girl Scouts from Troop 1839 with help from the city's Parks and Recreation Department. One table is accessible at the trailhead and another sits along Treehouse Trail, both created through Charleston's Hearts of our Neighborhood initiative to strengthen community gathering spaces.
