1. Heavy Labor Day weekend traffic expected (wsaz.com) — If you're driving in or out of Charleston this Labor Day weekend, expect heavier traffic, especially around the Fort Hill Bridge and along the West Virginia Turnpike. Transportation officials and AAA recommend traveling in the morning, checking your route, and making sure your vehicle is road-ready as more than 400,000 toll transactions are projected between Friday and Monday.
   

2. WVPB To Host Second Be My Neighbor Day! (wvpublic.org) — Charleston families are invited to Be My Neighbor Day on September 26 at City Center at Slack Plaza, a free event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kids can meet Daniel Tiger, enjoy yoga, music, reptiles, and face painting, while parents connect with local organizations and help assemble sensory care kits for children with disabilities across West Virginia.
   

3. Charleston Wizarding Weekend is back for 2026 (wvnstv.com) — Charleston families can look forward to a free, Harry Potter–inspired Wizarding Weekend downtown from October 23–25 at City Center at Slack Plaza on Summers Street. Expect art, music, kid-friendly classes, vendors, a scavenger hunt, and plenty of themed fun, with opportunities to volunteer or become a vendor if you want to get more involved.
   

4. Kanawha County house fire claims person's life; two taken to the hospital (wsaz.com) — Emergency crews responded Friday night to a deadly house fire on Witcher Creek Road in the Belle area, with one person killed and two others taken to CAMC General in Charleston. Multiple volunteer fire departments and Kanawha County emergency agencies battled flames that engulfed the home, and details on the survivors' injuries are still emerging.
   

5. Governor Morrisey announces first awards from Rural Health Transformation Program (wvnstv.com) — From Charleston, state leaders have announced nearly $2.4 million in first-round awards from the Rural Health Transformation Program to expand worksite clinics and employer-based healthcare across West Virginia. The goal is to bring care closer to where people work, improving prevention and chronic disease management so more residents can stay healthy and employed.
