With the WVSSAC expanding the field to eight teams per class and stretching play over two weeks, locals are seeing fuller parking lots, more business for shops and hotels, and a rare chance to watch more state-level games close to home. 
• Obituary: Pierce, Paul R. Jr., (wtap.com) — South Charleston is noted as the birthplace of Paul R. Pierce Jr., a longtime Wood County educator and coach who has died at 73. Family and friends can pay respects at visitation Wednesday evening in Parkersburg and a graveside service Thursday at Sunset Memory Gardens.
