Meet Cynthia Kaump, Candidate For Wisconsin State Treasurer

Cynthia Kaump, a small business owner and financial professional from Madison is on the ballot for Wisconsin State Treasurer on Aug. 14.

WISCONSIN — After voters in Wisconsin voted to keep the State Treasurer's position in an April referendum, several candidates are now running to occupy the office.

The position of State Treasurer has been stripped of its official powers over the years by state Republican leaders, leaving it with one remaining function: to appear on the three-member Board of Commissioners of Public Lands.

Several of the candidates for this office are seeking to expand the role of the State Treasurer's position again. Cynthia Kaump, a small business owner and financial professional from Madison, says she will fight to re-expand the role of State Treasurer while also safeguarding funding for public schools.

Please characterize where you fall on the political spectrum:
Kaump is a proud Democrat raised in a union household and the product of a public education. She worked in the Office of State Treasurer under two Republicans and maintains good relationships with lawmakers and officials of both parties. Kaump has strong progressive values but believes people of both parties should “play well in the sandbox” together, especially on issues relating to finance and good government.

Relevant political experience:

For twenty years Kaump was a political and investigative reporter for television outlets throughout Wisconsin and two national broadcasters. She has experience holding politicians, businesses, and governments accountable. As Director of Communication and Community Outreach for the Office of the State Treasurer from 2012-2015 she was responsible for communications, administering programs, and legislative outreach. As the owner of a modern marketing company she has also advised political candidates and organizations. In addition, Kaump has insurance and financial experience and licenses that qualify her to oversee Wisconsin’s investments.

Leading issues:

Kaump intends to use her experience, relationships, and passion to restore and expand the powers of the Office of State Treasurer. She will work to restore programs that were unconstitutionally transferred away from the office, such as Unclaimed Property. She will fight to protect our public lands, fight to defend public pensions, and safeguard the funding for our public schools. She will create new programs to distribute money to victims of crime, eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse, and create greater financial literacy for our children. Kaump takes the role of being Wisconsin’s financial guardian seriously and will administer this office to its highest potential, advocate to expand it, and communicate its importance to the people of Wisconsin.
