• Appleton Police Department's K-9 Onyx to retire due to vision loss (wearegreenbay.com) — Appleton residents are saying goodbye to police K-9 Onyx, who's retiring after five years of service due to a degenerative eye condition that caused blindness. Officer Rieth will travel to New Mexico to train a new K-9 partner, while Onyx enjoys retirement at home. The department also thanked community donors whose support keeps its K-9 program strong.
   

• Philosophy professor, 'Jeopardy!' champion Ben Chan now teaching at Lawrence University (fox11online.com) — Appleton's Lawrence University has hired "Jeopardy!" champion Ben Chan as an associate professor of philosophy, bringing a nationally known quiz whiz to campus. Chan previously taught at St. Norbert College before its philosophy program was cut and has past ties to Lawrence. He'll focus on biomedical ethics, technology ethics, food ethics, and questions about living a good life.
   

• Nepali Americans from Appleton raise support for flood relief in Nepal (tmj4.com) — Two Nepali Americans now living in Appleton are rallying support for their homeland after catastrophic flooding near the Nepal-China border left thousands dead or missing. They describe the emotional toll of waiting for news from loved ones and the tight-knit Nepali community in Wisconsin. Residents here are encouraged to donate to Nepal's official Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund to aid recovery.
