Greendale, Are You Ready for the Village Days Parade?

This week this Village Grandma is thinking about Village Days, candy throwing politicians, and the Post Office

Well, let me see what Village news I can come up with this week ...

err ... Recycling Center. The whole thing looks like a major undertaking and to be fair, the building could really use some work. So, if you have any talents in the dump remodeling business, this might be the job for you.

Time does fly doesn't it? I found out the parade this year will be better than ever. However, I wonder if — behind the scenes — there is a big debate every year as to whether the all of the Village Trustees should save gas money and ride together in one vehicle — I’m thinking a big “mom van” or flat bed truck. The other option would be for each trustee to ride in a convertible of their very own. Of course, if they each have their own vehicle, I imagine there will be some competition about which one of them will have the best and most candy or the most accurate throwing arm. Personally, I am hoping for the individual cars. We surely don't want to deprive our children of the fun of filling their little bags with goodies. And, for any trustee who is interested in gaining my vote I prefer Tootsie Rolls.

Village Days will also see the Library Used Book Sale and the — there’s still time to buy tickets. There will also be the usual library book sale and the introduction this year of  a Saturday movie night at one of the stages.  Yet one more venue to meet  and mingle with other villagers.

In education news, you should know that Greendale High School will be . They are Nathan Joynt and Katie Petersen. You might already be familiar with Ms. Petersen as she previously served as the Orchestra Deacher for Greendale High School, before rising to the level of this new position. Mr. Joynt hails from Whitefish Bay. So, a hearty hello and best of luck to both.

There was a rumor flying around the Village last week that our beloved Post Office was on the Postal Service’s hit list for closure. I checked and rechecked the list of possible post office closings and couldn’t find Greendale listed anywhere. Thank goodness! It would have been a real problem for those of us with QVC package returns.

I’ve got a super retail announcement!

Here’s important news for all of you who are interested in improving your mental status, or are concerned about losing your mind. Harbor Village will be launching something called “Brain Health University” this month. I presume the goal will be to revamp your thinking processes and help keep the old brain cells from shriveling up due to aging and/or lack of use.

In a related story, last week I went into my bank and asked the teller for a book of stamps. I'm sure we all have done the same thing at some time right? No?

Every time I drive past Southridge there seems to be some new improvements. The whole thing is quite exciting. It also appears that the senior housing is progressing at a pretty good clip as well.

Apparently, it's not just auto drivers who are ignoring stop signs in the Village. It seems that one of my neighbors observed a near-miss with a bicycle at one of our major intersections. What is it about our stop signs that attracts these scofflaws?

I'm happy to report that Gump, the mammoth cat, has come out of his self imposed isolation. I knew he was OK because every morning at 5 a.m. he puts his cold wet nose on my nice warm sleepy nose. That is the signal that he is ready for breakfast. He also has a new fascination. He spends much of his time staring down my  garbage disposal in some sort of rapture. So in between that and his voracious eating habit he has a full life.

The year has sure  gone by fast hasn't it? Now when I get up at 5 a.m. it is noticeably darker so fall can't be far away. Anyhow, hope you have a good week and hope to see you all at Village Days.

Until next week.
