Village Grandma: Block Grant Money Used for Public Bathrooms?

This week the Village Grandma has good news about the Angle Lane Bridge. She's also getting ready to celebration Park and Recreation Month and thinks public restrooms in the Village center are a pretty good idea.

Happy Monday Greendale,

The steamy weather has really taken a toll on my nosing around.  It is too hot and humid for much snooping activity. I did sniff out a few newsy tidbits though.

First, I have huge news concerning the broken Angle Lane Bridge. I have it on good authority that repair plans are finally in the offing. A county representative assures us that the bridge will be replaced using FEMA money granted after the flooding two years ago. Since the money must be used before next February I'm assuming that — this being a government led project — the work will start about January 25, 2012. Better late than never. Right?

I noticed quite a traffic jam on 76th and Grange recently. Lots of folks slowing down in order to fill the boots of the fireman who were collecting money for neuromuscular diseases. The firemen were there in full firefighting regalia despite the heat. I hope they collected a bundle for a good cause.

There are a couple of important decisions being considered by our Village Board at their July 19th meeting. First, the proposal by Ricardo's for outside dining will be voted on. I really don't see any drawbacks. So, I'm hoping for a positive outcome.

Another important decision that must be decided is how to spend $35,000 in Block Grant money. The Greendale Historical Society would like to see the money go toward the restoration of the Historical Hose Tower replete with restroom facilities. Anyone who has been to Village Days, the Gazebo concerts or Fourth of July celebration can testified that public restrooms are few and far between in our Village center. Lack of these facilities is problematic, especially for us older folks who have particular restroom needs. Am I right fellow seniors? So, come to the July 19th meeting and voice your opinions.

Here's yet another way to serve your community. The Health Department is seeking board members to fulfill a 2-year term. It would be helpful if you have a medical background. If interested contact the Greendale Health Department.

I also hear that the Village is poised to declare August as “Park and Recreation Month” in the Village. I think it might be nice if each of us would recognize Jackie Schweizter, director of the , in some special way. Maybe a high five, a fist bump, a pat on the back, a handshake or just a simple, “you go girl!”

Of course, August is always a big month in our little hamlet. Village Days will be upon us starting on August 12 and continuing through that weekend. Once again, we can gather as a community for the traditional parade, food, bands and general merriment.

I see by my newspaper that several establishments have started advertising back to school sales. As if time doesn't fly by fast enough as it is. I'm sure it won't be long before Santa rears his ugly head. Oh. Wait. Sorry … poor choice of words.

It's been a while since I heard anything about the Tall Corn Contest. It's getting harder and harder to keep my lanky plant from crashing to the ground due to the top-heavy seed burden. But, it is quite comforting to see it towering over my roof as I'm driving toward my house. I'm sure you all feel the same about your plant.

I see Wisconsin is once again in the forefront of innovative thinking. Our State Fair will be the first in the nation to introduce the latest fad in foodstuffs. Deep fried butter on a stick! I, for one, couldn't be more proud.  I've always said it was way too much work to get out a knife and butter ones toast. Now you can do away with the bread entirely and just tuck into a nice hot, crispy quarter pound of pure fat. Just makes your mouth water, right?

My cats have a bad habit of gathering at my feet especially when I'm using my stairs. So, it was inevitable that, at some point in time I would step on one or both of them. Sadly for me, it was Gump who let out a god-awful yowl and retaliated by removing a chunk of my leg.  I think it's possible that he is part badger. I’m tempted to get one of those do it yourself pet DNA kits to make sure.

I hope all of you are staying cool during the hot spell.
