Federal inspectors cited the university earlier this year, and past violations have already led to six-figure fines, while advocacy groups continue pressing for stronger enforcement of animal welfare rules.

• Off-duty UW-Madison police officer helps catch man with knife (fox47.com) — An off-duty UW–Madison police officer helped locate a 31-year-old Madison man suspected of brandishing a knife on Langdon Street after an overnight campus alert. Officers arrested him near Monroe Street and Randall Avenue, recovered a knife plus drugs, and booked him into Dane County Jail on multiple tentative charges and an existing warrant.

• Madison-area sewer district scales back proposed 2027 rate increase to 9.9% (wmtv15news.com) — Madison residents could see higher sewer bills in 2027 as the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District scales back its proposed rate hike from 12% to 9.9% while still planning major infrastructure work. The district, serving 24 communities and about 440,000 people, is rethinking its reserves and financing after pushback from McFarland and others, with final budget action set for October 22.
