📰 News we're reading
• Demolition of Madison's Wonder Bar approved despite preservation push (captimes.com) — Madison's Plan Commission has unanimously approved demolishing the historic Wonder Bar and nearby Coliseum Bar to make way for a seven-story, 190-unit apartment building with ground-floor retail at Olin Avenue and John Nolen Drive. Despite strong public opposition and preservation concerns, commissioners concluded the deteriorated building couldn't be feasibly saved while meeting city plans for denser development at the site.

• 'SaferBar' program works to educate Madison service workers to identify signs of sexual violence (wsaw.com) — More than 20 Madison bars and restaurants are now enrolled in the SaferBar training program, which teaches staff to spot and interrupt potential sexual violence. Local trainers focus on bystander intervention, de-escalation, and recognizing predatory behaviors so both patrons and employees can feel safer during a night out in the city's nightlife spots.

• Wisconsin's largest cities see major split in new national driving report (wearegreenbay.com) — Madison drivers rank 26th among the nation's 100 largest cities in a new WalletHub study, standing out for strong roadway safety and a very low accident likelihood. The city scores more modestly on traffic, ownership costs, and access to services, but still fares far better than Milwaukee, which lands near the bottom of the list for drivers.
